Brian Oliver and John Malone invoke our 'inner fish' in their commentary on new research in Journal of Biology from Timothy Hughes and colleagues, which shows that although tissue-specific gene expression is highly conserved from fish to human, conservation is notably lacking in the gene regulatory sequences.
