Received by NCI in 1989. The NIH(S) stock carrying the nude (nu) mutation was crossed to the CBA/N (to NIH from Harwell, 1966) which contributed the X-chromosome-linked immune defect (xid) and beige (bg) mutations. The NIH-III stock has segregated for color and albino animals are no longer seen. The NIH-III (Triple Deficient) stock carries three separate mutations resulting in a mouse with deficiencies in T, B and NK cells. The beige ( bg) autosomal recessive mutation produces impaired chemotaxis and motility of macrophages and a deficiency in Natural Killer (NK) cells which initiate cytolysis of tumor cells. The nude ( nu) autosomal recessive mutation produces a severe depletion of T-lymphocytes due to thymic dysgenesis. The X-chromosome-linked immune defect ( xid) recessive mutation produces functional defects of the B-lymphocytes. |
