AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today unveiled a public service announcement to raise awareness and encourage donations to the Texas Disaster Relief Fund. Contributions to the fund are tax deductible and will be allocated to local governments and organizations to help those directly impacted by Hurricane Ike.

Texas Continues Efforts to Rebuild Communities and Lives
AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today encouraged displaced Texans to remain patient as the state continues to make progress restoring its communities and readying its neighborhoods for residents’ safe return home. To date, power has been restored to more than half of the customers who lost electricity during Hurricane Ike. State Rolls Out Shorter Application for Disaster Food Stamps
Texans in counties declared a disaster area due to Hurricane Ike can now apply for disaster food stamps using a shorter, two-page application. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission has posted the new application in English and Spanish on its website at http://www.hhsc.state.tx.us. -

Dyed Diesel Waivers
The Governor’s office has secured waivers from the EPA and the IRS to allow for the use of dyed diesel for on road use. This will allow farmers and ranchers who have dyed diesel on affected properties to legally use the fuel on the highway through midnight, September 25th. -

More than 1,000 Highway Patrol, Criminal Law Enforcement, Driver License and Texas Ranger personnel continue to work in Southeast Texas. Additional officers have been moving into the area over the past several days, replacing those who have been working since before Hurricane Ike made landfall. Policing activities include restricting access to damaged locations, traffic management, security and other duties as necessary. Retail food establishments must contact their regulating authority before reopening. Texas Department of Criminal Justice officials have cancelled weekend visitation at the following facilities unless their commercial power is restored : Cleveland Unit, Eastham Unit, Ellis Unit, Ferguson Unit, Lewis Unit, Darrington Unit, Hospital Galveston, Central Unit, Stiles Unit, Gist State Jail, LeBlanc Unit, Plane State Jail, Henley State Jail, Hightower Unit and the Jefferson County Jail where TDCJ has leased beds. To locate medical special needs evacuees, please call Department of State Health Services at toll-free (888) 777-5320. Phones will be answered from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and callers may leave a message at other times. Callers need to provide information such as the name, address, date of birth, gender, last known location and specific medical special need of the evacuee.
