Towns, Issa Challenge OSHA to Rectify Workplace Safety Enforcement Failures

The Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform today sent a letter to Labor Secretary Hilda Solis expressing concern regarding a report released by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) identifying “multiple failures in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Enhanced Enforcement Program (EEP) which resulted in a number of avoidable fatalities.”

Towns, Kucinich Demand BofA, Merrill Lynch Documents from Treasury and the Fed

U.S. Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns (D-NY), the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), Chairman of the Domestic Policy Subcommittee, are expanding the Committee’s investigation into Bank of America’s (BofA) acquisition of Merrill Lynch & Co. The Congressmen chose to increase the investigation upon learning in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal that BofA CEO Ken Lewis stated under oath with the New York State Attorney General that he was pressured to withhold details pertaining to the BofA acquisition of Merrill Lynch from investors.

Towns, Issa Raise Concerns Over Defense Department’s Ability to Prevent Cyber Attacks; Request DOD briefing on potential infiltration of Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Program

In a letter to Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, Chairman Edolphus “Ed” Towns, D-NY, and Ranking Member Darrell Issa, R-CA, request that the Department of Defense (DOD) provide Committee staff with a briefing regarding a recent news report alleging that computer spies may have infiltrated the DOD’s Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Program, which is reportedly the most expensive weapons program ever managed by the Department.

Chairman Towns Announces Plan to Help State Auditors Meet Demands of Recovery Act

U.S. Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns (D-NY), the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, today announced during the first bipartisan Stimulus oversight field hearing in Brooklyn, NY, that he will introduce legislation to increase funding for state auditors who are currently struggling to meet the demands of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Chairman Towns wants to ensure that state auditors have the tools to administer stimulus funds at the state level both efficiently and fairly.

Chairman Towns Calls on Vice President Biden to Convene IT Roundtable, Establish Uniform Approach to Track Stimulus Funds

U.S Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns (D-NY), the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, today announced that he is calling on Vice President Joseph R. Biden to convene a high-tech roundtable of information technology (IT) leaders to develop a uniform approach to track and account for ARRA funding. Chairman Towns is concerned that Recovery.gov, the Administration’s primary transparency tool, is not yet capable of tracking funding from each federal, state, and local agency that receives stimulus funds.
