Car Pooling to the NCI-Frederick

If you would like to car pool to the NCI-Frederick campus, please click on Car Pooling and complete the  required fields.  Negoiating/Matches are done by the car poolers.  So, if you see someone that lives in your area that may be a potential car pooler, please contact them directly.  Please e-mail jhartman@ncifcrf.gov if you should have any questions or concerns.

Classes/Workshops at NCI-Frederick and Fort Detrick

In order to better serve our work force and the greater Frederick community, classes are being offered by the NCI-Frederick and Fort Detrick. Many of these classes are open to anyone who would like to register; they are not all limited to NCI-Frederick or Fort Detrick staff. We welcome the community to take advantage of these classes and hope to broaden the selection in the future. If you would like additional information about a class, points of contact are provided for each class as are web sites, if available.

Farmers' Market at the NCI-Frederick on Fort Detrick

The Farmers’ Market at the NCI-Frederick on Fort Detrick was established in 1997. Some of the products offered by the market vendors include but are not limited to fruits, vegetables, baked goods, cut flowers, honey, herbs, Emu products (meat and skin care), candies, beef, and a wide range of crafts. The market dates change each season, but it is always held on Tuesdays from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.. The market is located in front of Building 549/Scientific Library/Conference Center/Discovery Café. The 2009 Market season will begin on 16 June and end on 27 October. we plan to hold another special Spring Garden Market this year. As soon as the date has been confirmed, it will be posted on this site and widely disributed to staff at the NCI-Frederick and Fort Detrick. NIH Speakers Bureau

Student Ethics Course

The Ethics and Scientific Research Study Guide is a minicourse that deals with the ethical issues scientists face when working in a lab.

Student Intern Program

This program, located at NCI-Frederick, is designed to expose Frederick or Washington County Public School Systems, St. John’s Catholic Prep (Frederick, MD), Frederick Christian Academy (Frederick, MD), Jefferson High School (Jefferson County, West Virginia), and Home Schooled seniors to research through "hands-on" laboratory training. Students work full-time (40 hours per week) for 9 consecutive weeks during the summer and continue during the school year (3 hours per day) as a student volunteer for high school graduation credit. During the summer, each student in this program receives a stipend of approximately $3,000.

Summer Student Seminar Series

The Summer Student Seminar Series allows summer interns to meet one another and hear about the broad range of research being carried out on the Frederick campus. The NCI-Frederick and USAMRIID Summer Student Seminar Series was initiated in 1997. Approximately 50-80 students attend the seminars.

Take Your Child to Work Day

The purpose of TYCTWD is to introduce children, ages 6 to 13, to the vital public services that their parents provide in support of the NCI-Frederick's/Fort Detrick's mission and to encourage future careers in science. All employees are welcome to bring their children, ages 6 to 13, to work on this day if approved by the employee's supervisor and safety rules are followed. Undergraduate Internship Program (UIP)

The UIP at the NCI-Frederick will offer undergraduates an opportunity to participate in an unpaid internship in an NCI laboratory or program and receive degree credit from their college or university. Each internship will be unique depending on the requirements of the program in which the undergraduate is participating and will be negotiated on an individual basis. In order for a student to apply, their academic institution must have an agreement in place with the NCI-Frederick. Complete information regarding the UIP, including how to apply, colleges/universities with agreements in place, and potential mentors, will be available early summer 2008.

Volunteer for the Elementary Outreach Program

The Elementary Outreach Program provides the opportunity for elementary school students to receive supplemental science training through hands-on experiences. The program is supported by the NCI at Frederick and its' system of support contractors who have entered into a formal partnership agreement with the Frederick County Public School System. We encourage our volunteers to take the program to schools in their neighborhoods if they live outside of Frederick County.
