Forest Service to Close Popular Recreation Site During Roundhill Fuels Reduction
South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
--The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will temporarily close the heavily used recreation area surrounding
Nevada Beach and the Lam Watah Trail near Stateline, Nev., during weekdays through mid-July 2009, to reduce the risk to public
safety from heavy equipment used to thin forest fuels. The closure will be in effect Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m.
until 6:00 p.m. The closure will not be in effect during weekends or evenings, but the Forest Service advises the public that
hazards may be present even when the closure is not in effect.
"We know that this is a very popular recreational site and that closing it temporarily to reduce wildfire risk to local
communities will inconvenience those who use the area to run, ride their bikes or walk their dogs," said Forest Service
spokeswoman Cheva Heck. "Respecting the closure will not only help ensure your personal safety, it will reduce interruptions
for our contractor and allow us to complete the work and lift the closure as quickly as possible."
During the project, the Rabe Meadows area and portions of the Lam Watah Trail near Nevada Beach Campground will be closed to
public entry from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The closed area will have signs posted with the Forest Order and
map for the closure. Additional signs will be posted explain the goals of the project. The project work will begin along the
fence line behind Nevada Beach Campground and will continue away from the campground towards Highway 50. Forest Service
personnel will be on site monitoring activities during the project.
The closure will not be in effect, nor will any work take place over holiday weekends, including Memorial Day (May 23,24, 25)
or the 4th of July weekend (July 3, 4, 5).
