Fullback Tony Fiocco takes a handoff from QB Chase Pratel during a workout at San Pasqual High School.

Springing into action

When Will Goodloe's Sharyland High football team opens spring drills, he expects dozens of people will be camped in the stands to watch. Football, even spring football, is big in Texas.

Although there probably won't be dozens of spectators at any San Diego Section high schools to watch spring workouts this month, don't try to tell the coaches or players it's not important.

LJCD tennis star's ranking continues to rise: Before competing in high school, Del Mar resident Daniel Faierman was recognized as the San Diego region's top-ranked tennis player in the boys 14s age group.

Petco + prom = stellar day for El Centro Southwest: For the five seniors on the El Centro Southwest High baseball team, yesterday was a red letter day for sure.

Cathedral stars find new stage: Playing in big league venues before larger-than-average crowds is an experience few high school athletes get to enjoy.

Freshman ballplayer growing on Granite Hills: Shopping for clothes and shoes is no small task for Granite Hills High freshman Daniel Starwalt. It has nothing to do with taste. His challenge is finding items that will still fit him in a few weeks.

'Fearless' Horizon pitcher puts her faith first: When Cassidy Coleman picks up a softball and walks toward the pitching circle, she is a messenger. “I use pitching as a ministry to spread the word,” said Coleman, a junior at Horizon, a Christian school in Clairemont. “I used to play for myself, but now I play for the Lord.”

Diverse captains seen as key for LCC: La Costa Canyon High volleyball players Ian Hendries and Cory Wagner look quite a bit different. But they do share one crucial characteristic – height. Hendries is 6-8, fair-skinned and has wavy blond hair. Wagner is 6-4, tanned and has straight dark hair.

Height not a hurdle for Vista High jumper: Danielle Littleton runs the hurdles so gracefully, so fluidly, so effortlessly, it's easy to forget she's just 5 feet, 4 inches. The Vista High junior doesn't give her height a second thought, even when lining up in the blocks against girls who tower over her.

High school Athletes of the Month:

Fagan turns up heat once again in Citrus West: Junior southpaw Michael Fagan of the San Diego Jewish Academy, who set a San Diego Section season record for strikeouts last year with 181, leads the section again this spring.

High school Athletes of the Week:

Plenty of choices for student-athletes at Scripps Ranch High : At approximately 3:07 p.m. last Thursday, Scripps Ranch High junior Chris Chan tossed a tennis ball skyward, arched his back and swatted a serve.

Athletic schedule uncertain at schools closed by flu: High school athletes at Mission Hills and Kearny remain in limbo after their campuses were closed last week because of the swine flu outbreak. The schools are scheduled to reopen May 18.

Bruce, Wilhelm help Mt. Carmel floor its foes: It was a pretty good haul for Mt. Carmel's Shelby Bruce yesterday at the Sundevil Invitational gymnastics meet at Mt. Carmel High. She scored three gold medals - and a date to the senior prom.

Aztecs reclaim Baum Dog Trophy: Some coaches might consider playing a tournament championship game 2½ weeks before the end of the regular baseball season a nuisance.

Westview vaulter sets section mark: A section record in the girls pole vault was almost a foregone conclusion before the track season started.

Mt. Carmel gymnast seeks fantastic finish: There was a long pause on the other end of the phone. Mt. Carmel coach Monique Lamphiere-Tamayoshi had just been asked what she thinks standout gymnast Shelby Bruce needs to improve. As the coach searched for an answer, she said plenty with her silence.

Otay Ranch baseball team must forfeit 12 wins: The Otay Ranch High baseball team must forfeit 12 victories this season for use of an ineligible player.

Veteran Horizon takes aim at Division IV baseball title: There's not much Horizon High baseball player Nathan Saquilon doesn't do well. The senior left-hander's 9-0 pitching record is second to none in the San Diego Section. He also ranks near the top in home runs (seven) and RBI (31).

Mater Dei Catholic's White steps down as coach, AD: Saying he needs some time off to “recharge his batteries,” Matt White has stepped down as football coach and athletic director at Mater Dei Catholic High.

Need for speed spurs Jarvis: The faint of heart might have trouble listening to Rancho Buena Vista High senior Collin Jarvis explain what motivated him to become one of the state's top distance runners.

6-foot-2 freshman swimmer thrives on competition: In his first major high school swim competition, Rancho Bernardo freshman Trent Williams wasn't bashful. He introduced himself by setting two meet records. "I was hoping just to make my mark to show a freshman could come in and get going in front of everyone," Williams said. "That was fun."

Coronado senior excels in sports, classroom: Coronado High senior Mason Mills thrives in the spotlight but doesn't crave the attention. Mills, who carries a 4.2 grade-point average, has delivered for the Islanders on the football field and the baseball diamond.

Santana High junior displays talent as pitcher, batter: If Santana High's Kyle Hayes were a pro, he might be labeled a franchise player. "He's that good," said Jerry Henson, Sultans baseball coach the past 18 seasons. "He does it all for us, and I think he would make a nice closer and first baseman at the next level."

Otay Ranch hurlers' new methods are getting results: The Otay Ranch High baseball team is used to scoring a lot of runs. It's what the Mustangs are doing on the mound this spring that's making a difference. "In the past, we've always been strong with the bats," coach Bob McCurdy said. "For the first time, though, we have the pitching."

Locals object to expanding bowl format: It might be a case of tilting at windmills, but the San Diego Section will take what is certain to be an unpopular stand at the CIF State Federated Council meeting next week in San Jose.

Tyler leads local all-state selections: Jeremy Tyler says he's turning pro and heading to Europe, but the basketball honors continue to flow in for the former San Diego High student.

Blue has renewed track spirit after motherhood: Laiah Blue only ran relays at yesterday's Triton Invitational at UCSD, but she watched every event.

Cougars on a crusade: When senior third baseman Danny MacIntyre broke his right hand in the fourth game of the season, it was an emotional loss as much as a physical setback for the Steele Canyon High baseball team.

Athletes gear up to help: Everything seemed to be working out perfectly. For the third consecutive year, Kids Gear for Baseball – a non-profit run by local high school athletes and their parents – had secured a grant from Major League Baseball, thanks to a nomination by the Padres.

Rookie pitcher has fuzz, buzz: For a 14-year-old freshman, Christian High's Cody Poteet pitches with the poise of a veteran. "I really should be in eighth grade," said Poteet, a 6-foot, 160-pound right-hander.

Community mourns death of former Poway wrestler: Former Poway High athlete Zdravko Divjak, one of the most successful wrestlers to emerge from the school's nationally recognized program, died Saturday from pancreatic cancer. He was 31.

Former Poway High wrestler Zdravko Divjak dies : Former Poway High wrestler Zdravko Divjak has died from pancreatic cancer. He was 31. Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at Maranatha Chapel, 10752 Coastwood Road, San Diego.

Young pitcher gets off to stellar start with El Capitan: In Steve Vickery's 30 years as a high school baseball coach, he has had two freshmen pitch in a varsity game. The first was Nik Garcia, who tossed one-third of an inning for El Capitan in a 2002 playoff loss to Eastlake. The latest is Troy Conyers, a 6-foot-3, 207-pound left-hander. Conyers is arguably the ace of the staff for El Capitan.

Poway grad a real steal for Hoosiers: Indiana University baseball coach Tracy Smith simply shakes his head when discussing Hoosiers freshman designated hitter Alex Dickerson, a 2008 graduate of Poway High who has started the first 36 games as the cleanup hitter for Indiana. “Every time I watch him step into the batter's box, I ask myself, 'How did we get him out of California?'” Smith said.

Family move means coach will leave tightknit gym team: Tears welled in Cody Salcedo's eyes as she spoke of how painful it will be to leave her girls behind. Salcedo coaches the Independent Gymnastics Team – made up of athletes from four South County high schools – but to her, it's more like a family. “I love them,” Salcedo said. “Gymnastics is my life.”

La Jolla's top two swimmers set sights high: Tyler Woods is a senior who didn't begin competitive swimming until he arrived at La Jolla High. Eric Hedlin is a sophomore teammate who joined the Vikings with ability honed by years of meet experience. Each is a defending San Diego Section Division II champion.

Titans jumper sets, meets goals an inch at a time: Alex Templeton is the first to acknowledge he's new to this sport of track and field. Oh, he high-jumped in the Poway Sixth Grade Championships, winning with a mark of 4 feet, 10 inches. Ditto for the Eighth Grade Championships, this time at 5-4. After being sidetracked by a broken arm that he suffered in a skateboard accident his freshman year at Poway High, Templeton gravitated toward football, where he focused on becoming a kicker for the Titans.

Sweetwater grad to coach football at St. Augustine: St. Augustine High has hired Richard Sanchez as head football coach. A graduate of Sweetwater High, Sanchez has spent the past four years as an assistant at Sacramento State. He coached tight ends and special teams last season.

Ralph to coach football at Del Norte High in 4S Ranch: The streak is over for Jerry Ralph, but he isn't complaining. Ralph, who guided St. Augustine to nine straight football playoff appearances after leading Santana to the postseason his final year with the Sultans, will not make it 11 straight.

Cooks burns field as Littleton, Templeton shine: Joe Cooks' experiment with running the 400- instead of the 100-meter dash has ended. The Mission Hills senior scorched a 10.55-second time in the 100-meter dash, clocking the second-fastest time in the state this year and lowering his own meet record of 10.64, yesterday in the evening portion of the Jaguar Invitational.

Loose Longhorns avoid being swept by Broncos: It was a pressure situation for the Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns. But they didn't look at yesterday's Palomar League game at Rancho Bernardo as dire straits.

La Jolla standout eyes fourth title: Most high school athletes are fortunate to win one San Diego Section title in their career. Tyler Heap is pursuing his fourth.

High school baseball scheduled for Petco Park: Ten high school baseball teams have been selected to play at Petco Park in May. The Padres and the San Diego Section unveiled the schedule Thursday.

Poway finds advantages to using 3 softball pitchers: Poway High softball coach Jim Bennet is among a growing number of coaches to use more than one pitcher a game. This season, the Titans use three pitchers just about evenly. His plan has worked to the tune of a No. 1 ranking in the San Diego Section for Poway.

Morse hurdler Muhammad aims high: When Elijah Muhammad settles into the blocks for the start of the 110-meter high hurdles, the barriers look short. Muhammad, a Morse High senior, isn't playing mind games, imagining that the hurdles have shrunk. They really aren't as high as they are in practice.

Student's athletic pursuits exceed expectations: On a warm spring afternoon at Chollas Lake Park, the Lutheran High baseball team goes through the rigors of practice.

Ramona benefit picture-perfect: Earl Holsapple was known in his community as a youth coach, volunteer and firefighter. He died 12 years ago from asthma complications at age 45.

Locals earn state basketball honors: Three local high school players have been honored with state basketball awards by CalHiSports.com, and two others not from the area are part of what the Web site is calling “the best recruiting class ever for San Diego State.”

Final lap seals mile victory for Silva: “I've been trying to lay low – until now,” said Sammy Silva with a grin. Unleashing a torrid sub-70 second final lap, the Harvard-bound senior from Our Lady of Peace roared into the lead and pulled away from many of the nation's top female runners to win the Arcadia Invitational mile in 4:54.08.

Senior hurdler closing gap at Mira Mesa: When Mira Mesa High head track coach Eric Miller says hurdler Brandon Chambers is taking extra classes because “he fell a little behind” his freshman and sophomore years, it doesn't seem possible.

Barons veteran finds his stroke: Senior Daniel Scanlon is a returning starter for the Bonita Vista High baseball team, but he's been struggling with the bat this spring.

RBV squad hits wall in baseball marathon: After two emotional come-from-behind wins in two days over top-notch competition, the Rancho Buena Vista High baseball team ran out of gas yesterday in the final of the Lions Tournament Classic Division at USD's Cunningham Stadium. The Longhorns dropped an 11-7 decision to the Temecula Valley Golden Bears.

Three longtime friends inspire San Ysidro's baseball team: Antonio Carrillo and Andres Enriquez can't help themselves. As Gustavo Guzman struggles with his English and gets hassled by his coach for not being in a practice uniform, his two teammates are doubled over in laughter.

Hoover High badminton player uses strengths to his advantage: Hoover High is as strong in badminton as any team in any sport this spring. The Cardinals, who have won seven of the past nine City Conference titles, have the defending champions in boys singles and boys doubles. Leading the way is singles winner Anh Vo.

RBV shortstop's talent appears on radar early: College recruitment of high school baseball players hasn't reached the extreme of basketball, at least not yet. It's not unheard of for talented eighth-graders to hear from college basketball coaches. Baseball is a little different. It's the most difficult sport for projecting future talent.

Senior leads by example in both sports, club activities: At a youth soccer practice years ago, while some players took a shortcut during a team run, Rebecca Truderung quietly went the full distance. The incident, submitted by a relative for a senior section in the Valley Center High yearbook, wouldn't surprise those at the school who know Truderung as a positive if unsung influence on the girls basketball team, around campus and in the community.

Merediths' family bond restored at Grossmont: When Conor Meredith walked onto the Grossmont High campus as a freshman, among his first thoughts was, “Gee, my dad works here, too.” Jeff Meredith was the Foothillers' Associated Student Body adviser and freshman football coach.

Gaffney still scoring at Cathedral: When Cathedral Catholic's Tyler Gaffney fouled a pitch off his knee in yesterday's Lions Tournament baseball game at El Capitan High, he hit the ground immediately.

Mission Hills pitcher keeps 'em guessing: Jared Allan has what Mission Hills baseball coach Ken Putnam calls an unorthodox pitching style.

San Marcos senior sticks to creating lacrosse legacy: Sarah Atkinson had made up her mind. She wanted a girls lacrosse team at San Marcos High. In a matter of days last fall, the ambitious senior gathered signatures from more than 80 potential players, lobbied the school's athletic department, recruited friends she'd made on the field hockey team and helped the Knights hire a lacrosse coach.

Lofty ranking good fit for LCC: Seems no one relishes the thought of being ranked No. 1 this time of year. Yet certain teams certainly look the part, especially La Costa Canyon.

Lions Tournament roars throughout the county: High school baseball's Lions Tournament will run today through Thursday at sites around the county.

Pointers capture title behind in-control Urbon: Jon Posternack knew his Point Loma Pointers packed enough punch to hang with the section's elite baseball teams.

Reactions vary but both Silva, Templeton win: Sammy Silva and Alex Templeton are about as different as two track athletes can be, but both came up big in yesterday's Elmer Runge Classic at Patrick Henry High.

Highlanders make the most of their opportunities, win crown: Opponents crossing paths with the Helix High baseball team this season are learning that any mistake proves costly.

Threw's walk-off grand slam lifts Vista: At some point last night it became clear this baseball game would not end normally. Tyler Threw crushed a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Vista to the North County Conference Tournament title with a 17-15 victory over Rancho Bernardo at Escondido High.

Morse jumper a triple threat: Sherie Key likes round numbers – 20, 40 and 5.5. The Morse High junior carries a 4.0 grade-point average, so she knows 5.5 isn't a round number. But when you compete in the high jump in addition to the long jump and triple jump, you have to bend the rules a little.
