Revised 1994 Cover Photo: Pawtucket Post Office, Pawtucket, Rhode
Island, constructed 1896-97. The new post office was welcomed by the
community, which regarded its first Federal building as a symbol of
the prosperity and progress it had achieved as a major industrial center
during the 19th century. The building is an excellent example of Beaux
Arts classicism, which dominated the style of public buildings after
the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. (Rhode Island Historical
