ITP Presents Save Energy Now Workshops in India
Jim Quinn, ITP Technology Delivery and Save Energy Now Lead, led a series of workshops in India to promote the Save Energy Now approach to the country's leading industrial decision-makers. The workshops—part of DOE's international cooperative efforts to promote industrial energy efficiency—were delivered in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), an industry-led organization with more than 7,500 direct members from the private and public Indian industrial sector. Riyaz Papar, a DOE Energy Expert and instructor, and Sachin Nimbalkar, a Process Heating Assessment and Survey Tool and Pumping System Assessment Tool Qualified Specialist, both from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, also attended. Conducted in Mumbai, Chennai, and New Delhi in early April 2009, the workshops covered topics ranging from industrial energy management to the Save Energy Now approach for improving efficiency in process heating, steam, and motor-driven systems. The DOE team also demonstrated several DOE software tools.
Additionally, CII arranged visits for the ITP team to several Indian industrial plants including TamiNadu Petroproducts in Chennai, Hindusthan National Glass in New Delhi, and Hindalco (aluminum) in Mumbai. Panel discussions closed out the workshops, during which ITP and CII members discussed potential areas for continued cooperation to reduce the Indian industry’s energy consumption. Both ITP and CII are currently working together on next steps for the possible adoption of several Save Energy Now activities by CII in India.
Leaders in Data Center Energy Efficiency Recognized at Uptime Research Symposium
DOE and the Uptime Institute presented seven awards to data center facilities for energy use improvements during the Uptime Institute's 4th Annual Research Symposium on April 15, 2009. DOE Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency John Lushetsky and Kenneth Brill, Executive Director of the Uptime Institute, presented the awards. MassMutual Financial Group won an award for Data Center Energy Efficiency Improvement in a Joint IT and Facilities application. UniCredit Group received an award for Data Center Energy Efficiency Improvement in a single facility. Awards were chosen based on the extent to which the improvements made an original contribution to IT or data center efficiency, how easily the reported lessons learned could be replicated in other businesses, the ambitiousness of the project, and the impact on energy costs and/or the carbon footprint of the organization. Save Energy This Summer: Apply for an Energy Assessment Today
As the hot summer months approach and your large plant works harder to cool down, consider participating in a Save Energy Now energy assessment. Three-day large plant assessments are conducted by DOE Energy Experts who use DOE’s software tools to identify energy-saving measures. On average, each large plant assessment yields potential savings of $2.5 million. Implementing measures could potentially save 10% or more annually on energy bills, as well as increase productivity and reduce carbon emissions. Many plants are already saving, and your plant could start saving, too. Apply today. Small- and medium-sized plants can apply to receive a one-day assessment from one of DOE’s university-based Industrial Assessment Centers.

Find Energy Solutions at ITP Co-Sponsored Summer Energy Conferences
ITP is co-sponsoring two upcoming national industrial energy conferences to help you assess the full range of potential energy solutions available to your facility. ITP plans to recognize manufacturing facilities at both events for implementing energy savings that were identified during a Save Energy Now energy assessment. Attend one or both of these events:
- The annual Industrial Energy Technology Conference will be held May 12-15, 2009, in New Orleans, Louisiana. This premier conference offers a comprehensive agenda with information on industrial innovations; energy management strategies; energy, waste, and emission reduction programs; and the latest in state and federal programs affecting industry.
- The West Coast Energy Management Congress will be held June 10-11, 2009, in Long Beach, California. DOE is a Government Leader for the event—the largest energy conference and technology expo on the U.S. west coast specifically for business, industrial, and institutional energy users. The show will feature information on energy supply and alternative energy options, project implementation strategies, and new technologies for industrial energy users. ITP will offer two conference sessions focusing on Save Energy Now energy assessments and Industrial Assessment Centers (Partnerships-Track 5). Register by May 29, 2009, to receive DOE's reduced rate.

The inaugural Santa Barbara Summit on Energy Efficiency will be held May 20-21, 2009, in Santa Barbara, California. Global influencers and stakeholders in energy efficiency technologies, commercialization, and policy will gather for in-depth discussions and the latest industry updates.
The Pacific Rim Conference on Ceramic and Glass Technology, held May 31-June 5, 2009, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, will explore the latest issues facing the ceramic and glass technology industry. Eight themed topic areas and 27 symposia will be offered on emerging technologies.

The ASHRAE Annual Conference will be held June 20-24, 2009, in Louisville, Kentucky. Attend to fulfill professional development credits, earn an ASHRAE certification in commissioning process management, and reach out to industry contacts.
Experts from around the globe will debate the challenges facing the international energy sector and offer solutions at the 32nd International Association for Energy Economics’ International Conference, held June 21-24, 2009, in San Francisco, California. This year’s theme—Energy, Economy, Environment: The Global View—will focus on topics of interest to energy consumers and producers, including oil, natural gas, transportation fuels, and electricity representatives.
Visit ITP in the Emerging Technologies Pavilion at the Society of Plastics Industry International Plastics Showcase, June 22-26, 2009, in Chicago, Illinois. Attend to learn about the latest plastics technologies and participate in training and networking opportunities.
The International District Energy Association’s 100th Annual Conference and Trade Show will be held June 28-July 1, 2009, in Arlington, Virginia. Attendees will learn about the latest approaches being used by industry leaders to address cap and trade legislation, carbon regulations, and economic drivers of district energy applications.

Attend the Biomass ’09: Power, Fuels, and Chemicals Workshop, July 14-15, 2009, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, to hear presentations on new technology developments for power production, transportation fuels, and chemical feedstocks from biomass.
Held July 28-31, 2009, in Niagara Falls, New York, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy’s 2009 Summer Study on Energy Efficiency will include presentations and discussions related to the policies and technical issues facing industry’s quest for energy efficiency.

Federal agencies and personnel will want to attend GovEnergy 2009, August 9-12, 2009, in Providence, Rhode Island. Celebrating its 12th year, the event is the premier energy training workshop and tradeshow for the federal government and will feature training opportunities, technical and financial resources, and energy-saving technologies.

Three Things You Should Know About DC Pro
ITP’s Data Center Energy Profiler (DC Pro) software tool suite features three resources to help you quickly diagnose how much energy is being used in your data center and identify potential savings opportunities.
1. DC Pro Profiling Tool—this scoping tool gives you a general idea of where the energy is being used in your data center. ITP awards cost-shared funding for R&D and plant assessment projects through a competitive merit review process.
New York State Energy Research and Development Authority Requests Proposals
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has issued the “Energy Smart Focus Program Focus on Industrial and Process Request for Proposal (RFP) 1263” to develop and implement statewide outreach strategies to address customers in the industrial and process sector, as well as improvements in process energy efficiency in both industrial facilities and data centers. NYSERDA’s preference is to award one contract. However, separate contracts may be necessary to effectively serve both industrial facilities and data centers. Proposals are due Wednesday, June 3, 2009, by 5:00 p.m. Eastern time.
NYSERDA will provide $6 million in funding to the selected proposer(s). RFP strategies to consider include, but are not limited to:
- Targeted outreach, training, and performance-based recruitment incentives
- Leveraging partnerships with trade associations
- Integration with local, state, regional, and national efforts
- Recognition of sector leaders
- Guidance for, and assistance to, customers using NYSERDA programs and services.
The initial contract will be for a 1-year period with two optional 1-year contract extensions at NYSERDA’s discretion. View the full RFP.

If you want to take advantage of the influx of funding opportunities from both ITP and other government agencies, be sure to complete the pre-registration process at Grants.gov to cut down on your preparation time when applying for funding. The process includes several one-time actions that must be completed before you can submit an application through Grants.gov:
- Obtain a Dun and Bradstreet Data Universal Number
- Register with the Central Contractor Registry
- Register with Grants.gov.
