Hearing Notice: Protecting our Schools: Federal Efforts to Strengthen Community Preparedness and Response
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Tuesday, April 17, 2007
April 17, 2007 – The Committee on Homeland Security has long considered school safety a major priority. In fact, at the end of March, Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), held a school safety forum in Mississippi to discuss some of the same issues that have been raised by yesterday’s unfortunate incident at Virginia Tech University.
In response to yesterday’s tragedy, the House Committee on Homeland Security will hold a full committee hearing to examine how the federal government can contribute to school safety and precisely what role they have in strengthening community response and preparedness.
More specifically, the Committee will consider ways to bridge the communication gap between Federal, State, and Local partners and to raise awareness on the need for effective preparedness and response plans.
