Section 152(b) of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA) provides Medicare coverage for Kidney Disease Patient Education Services for individuals with Stage IV CKD. Coverage for these services is designed to provide individuals with comprehensive information regarding the management of comorbidities, prevention of uremic complications, each available option for renal replacement therapy, provide individuals with the opportunity to actively participate in the choice of therapies, and provide information tailored to individual patient needs. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services held two events to solicit stakeholder feedback regarding implementation of MIPPA section 152(b). The first feedback session was conducted as a Special Open Door Forum held by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on November 6, 2008 where approximately 200 people, representing approximately 70 organizations, participated via teleconference. The second event was hosted on December 16, 2008 at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), where approximately 60 people, representing approximately 40 organizations participated.
