Thompson Applauds Training Grant for Southern Miss

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Monday, October 22, 2007

October 22, 2007 – Today, Committee on Homeland Security Chairman, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), lauded the announcement by the Department of Homeland Security that it will provide the University of Southern Mississippi with a nearly $3.5 million Competitive Training Grant for the University’s Center for Spectator Sports Security Management.

The funding will allow the Center to train an estimated 5,370 officials at 1,055 institutions nationwide on sport security management. The diverse training program will build multi-agency collaboration by delivering instruction to campus officials, local law enforcement, and emergency services. This grant also creates a new and welcomed partnership between the University of Southern Mississippi and the Department of Homeland Security.

Thompson issued the following statement regarding the award:

“There is nothing more important then securing our nation’s youth. In the wake of recent acts of violence on college campuses, this grant couldn’t have been received at a better time,” said Thompson.

“I am excited that this program will be executed in my home state and hope that universities across the country will involve themselves in this training. The University of Southern Mississippi’s sports security program will be the example to the rest of the nation.”
