Increase in Avalanche Accidents over the Holidays

MOUNT SHASTA, Calif. (December 31, 2008) - Nine avalanche fatalities have occurred in the western United States since December 14, 2008. These occurred in Colorado, Utah, California and Wyoming with skiers, snowmobilers and snowboarders, all out having fun until the avalanche occurred.

The thin snow pack and cold temperatures in the western States created a weak snow base. As heavy snow storms arrived, a cohesive slab of snow formed on a weak base, just needing a trigger to release an avalanche.

Eric White, an Avalanche Specialist with the US Forest Service Mt. Shasta Avalanche Center, suggests a few tips for those traveling in the backcountry. “First, get some information before you head out. Check with your local avalanche center for the current avalanche hazard and recommended actions to take. Second, be observant, looking for the clues to instability which nature provides. Those include the Five Red Flags of Avalanche Danger:

  1. Recent avalanches
  2. Heavy snow fall, usually an inch per hour or more
  3. Strong winds transporting snow
  4. Shooting cracks or 'whoompfing' sounds
  5. Rain or rapid warming.

Never travel alone in the backcountry, and last, carry and know how to use the backcountry essentials: avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe.

With stormy weather continuing in much of the west, avalanche forecasters remain concerned. Avalanche danger ratings at many of the avalanche centers are currently Considerable or High. For more information on avalanches, go to the National Avalanche Center web page: http://www.fsavalanche.org/. To find the nearest avalanche center, go to: http://www.avalanche.org/ or call the Mt. Shasta Ranger Station at (530) 926-4511.
