More Problems Besiege TWIC

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, sent a letter to Michael Chertoff, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, regarding new problems with the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Production delays have resulted from 8 of 12 printing machines being returned to the manufacturer for repair or replacement. A link to the letter is below.

Chairman Thompson released the following statement with the letter:

“It is difficult to determine which is more astonishing – a 66 percent machine failure rate or a ten-fold increase in card production time,” said Thompson. “This is yet another link in a chain of problems hampering the nation’s transportation workers from meeting the April 2009 deadline.”
