San Diego dropout rate shows positive trend

The dropout rate for the San Diego Unified School District plummeted by nearly 50 percent, to 9.3 percent, in the 2007-2008 school year, when compared to the year before, according to data released by the California Department of Education Tuesday.

'Beautiful' I-5 ramp rock-and-gravel landscaping needs to be maintained

When George Cavanagh called Just Fix It about the landscaping along a Caltrans ramp, he started on a positive note and almost never stopped. The sprawling rock and gravel installed a few years ago along the connector from westbound State Route 54 to northbound Interstate 5, arranged to form stars, a river, and other designs, is “beautiful,” Cavanagh said.

Slightly warmer than usual temperatures ahead
Mild weather, with only slight variations in the timing and reach of the marine layer, is in store for the county this week. Temperatures should be a little bit above normal at the coast, with highs in the low to mid 70s. The inland valleys should reach the upper 70s to low 80s.


City Council will discuss Najera's job

Driver chased by police caught just across border
A man suspected of driving a stolen pickup led Chula Vista police on a 20-minute chase yesterday afternoon before he was apprehended in Mexico after running across the border at the San Ysidro port of entry, a police spokesman said.


Sales tax measure is easily defeated
Chula Vista voters overwhelmingly rejected a sales tax increase yesterday, stifling the city's last-resort attempt at bringing in more revenue.
About 67 percent of those voting by mail ballot said no to Proposition A, a 1 percentage point sales tax increase, that was billed as the answer to layoffs and cuts in city services. The proposition required a simple majority to pass. The tally was 19,216 against the tax and 9,368 for it.


Port rep: Mayor wants me out
Chula Vista Port Commissioner Mike Najera said Mayor Cheryl Cox asked him to resign Monday and he refused. Cox gave Najera until noon yesterday to resign from the San Diego Unified Port District commission or she would “go to the media,” Najera said.

Ballots on sales tax hike are due by 8 p.m. today
Registered Chula Vista voters have until 8 p.m. today to turn in their mail ballots on Proposition A, which would increase the city's sales tax rate by 1 percentage point.


Exit of top executives continues at City Hall
Another high-ranking manager is leaving Chula Vista next month, the 12th executive to leave the city in the past 15 months. Deputy City Manager Leah Browder, whose many duties include library director, will become director of public works in her hometown of Poway beginning in early June.

Financing for ballot measure gets boost
In less than one month, supporters of Chula Vista's sales tax ballot measure – Proposition A – have raised $23,178, bringing their fundraising total to $46,078 since January.

Animal facility holding pet food donation drive
CHULA VISTA: The city of Chula Vista's Animal Care Facility is holding a pet food donation drive to support animals at the city's only shelter.
The community is being asked to donate new, unopened containers of pet food through May 31. Collection bins have been placed at seven locations throughout the city, including all Chula Vista public libraries, the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, 130 Beyer Way, City Hall and Montevalle and Veterans' Park recreation centers.


District to rescind layoff notices
The South Bay Union Elementary School District plans to rescind tentative layoffs for 58 teachers, a move that will keep whole the district's signature dual-immersion program at Nestor elementary school.

Chula Vista officials this week reiterated their desire to remove the South Bay Power Plant from the city's bayfront and outlined seven energy goals.
