President Obama Takes Action to Advance Biofuels Production

President Barack Obama has announced several steps that his administration is taking to advance biofuels research and commercialization, including the formation of a Biofuels Interagency Working Group and the expedited release of funds made available by the 2008 farm bill.

DOE to Invest $786.5 Million in Recovery Act Funds in Biofuels

President Barack Obama announced on May 5 that DOE plans to invest $786.5 million from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act to accelerate advanced biofuels research and development and to provide additional funding for biorefinery demonstration projects.

EPA's Proposed Renewable Fuel Standard Tackles GHG Emissions

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 boosted the federal requirements for the use of renewable fuels in the United States, but it also added greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions requirements for the fuels. A new proposed rulemaking by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) attempts to address those GHG requirements.

DOE to Invest $93 Million in Recovery Act Funds in Wind Power

DOE announced on April 29 its plans to provide $93 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to support further wind energy development. The agency will also invest more than $100 million in Recovery Act funds for facility and infrastructure improvements at its National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

New Hospital Energy Alliance to Promote Clean Energy in Healthcare

Clean energy is good for human health, so it makes sense for healthcare leaders to want to use clean energy in their hospitals. The new Hospital Energy Alliance will promote the use of energy efficiency and renewable energy in hospitals by bringing together national healthcare leaders and DOE.

BLM to Invest Recovery Act Funds on Renewable Energy Permitting

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, will invest $41 million in Recovery Act funds to reduce its backlog of applications for renewable energy projects. The Interior Department is also establishing four new Renewable Energy Coordination Offices to help cut through the red tape.

Study: Climate Targets Greatly Limit the World's Near-Term Use of Fossil Fuels

A study published in the journal Nature on April 30 concludes that the world's nations need to achieve substantial reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions soon, or it will become exceeding difficult to maintain the global temperature rise within reasonable limits.
