Dear Colleagues: |
It is with great pleasure that, on behalf of the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I welcome you to the 2009 Nuclear Materials Management and Safeguards System (NMMSS) Users and Training Meeting. |
The NMMSS serves a critical role in the U.S. Government’s ability to maintain operational awareness of the inventory, status, and whereabouts of nuclear materials. Accuracy, transparency, and completeness of the data enable informed decision-making for a wide range of issues affecting the national security of the United States and public safety and health. |
The recent joint DOE-NRC initiative to consolidate and streamline NMMSS operation at DOE's Germantown, Maryland Headquarters is a first step in a comprehensive strategy to enhance and strengthen system performance. Our immediate priorities are to reduce the inherent uncertainties in the reported data and to advance system functionalities. |
The main objectives of the 2009 Meeting are to foster the already solid interaction and partnership within the NMMSS community, solicit your feedback and suggestions, and find creative solutions to address our common challenges. The ultimate success of the NMMSS centers on you! |
I wish you a safe journey to Denver and a productive meeting. |
