Notices and Updates

  • March 27, 2009: The Federal Reserve Board issued its annual revision to the index of industrial production (IP) and the related measures of capacity and capacity utilization. With this revision, the series code for Carpet and Rug Mills (NAICS 31411) was changed to G31411. Prior to the revision, the series code was N31411. Data for the new series are available on the Board's public website and the Data Download Program.
  • March 27, 2009: Seasonal factors for auto and truck production were revised in March 2009 for the annual revision to the index of industrial production. These factors are based on production data through February 2009 and were revised back to January 2000. Seasonal factors will next revise in mid June 2009, when manufacturers issue their initial assembly plans for the third quarter. A comma-delimited text file containing these seasonal factors is available for download.

  • March 16, 2009: The Federal Reserve Board plans to issue an annual revision to the index of industrial production (IP) and the related measures of capacity and capacity utilization on March 27, 2009, at 2:00 p.m..
  • February 18, 2009: The data in this release include preliminary estimates of industrial capacity for 2009. Measured fourth quarter to fourth quarter, total industrial capacity is projected to decrease 0.3 percent this year after having expanded 1.5 percent in 2008. Manufacturing capacity is estimated to decline 0.6 percent in 2009 after having risen 1.7 percent last year. In 2009, mining capacity is estimated to expand 0.8 percent, about the same as in 2008, and utilities capacity is projected to rise 1.7 percent, which is 0.5 percentage point slower than it had last year. With the publication on March 27, 2009, of the annual revision to industrial production, capacity, and capacity utilization, these estimates will be updated to reflect more-comprehensive source data, including the U.S. Census Bureau's Survey of Plant Capacity for the fourth quarter of 2008, which covers manufacturing.
  • January 16, 2009: The Federal Reserve Board plans to issue an annual revision to the index of industrial production (IP) and the related measures of capacity and capacity utilization on March 27, 2009.
  • November 17, 2008: Seasonal factors for auto and truck production were revised in November 2008 and extended through September 2009. These factors were based on production data through September 2008 and were revised back to May 2008. Seasonal factors will next revise at the time of the annual revision to the index of industrial production, currently planned for the end of March 2009. A comma-delimited text file containing these seasonal factors is available for download.
  • September 15, 2008: Capacity utilization rates for October 2007 through February 2008 have been updated with this release. In April 2008, a six-month reporting window was instituted for the industrial production indexes in the G.17 Statistical Release; however, the capacity utilization rates inadvertently continued to be calculated for only a four-month window. Table 7A shows the revised rates for the affected months. The data download program and the historical data files on the Federal Reserve Board's website have been updated with revised data.
  • September 15, 2008: The Federal Reserve Board plans to issue an annual revision to the index of industrial production (IP) and the related measures of capacity and capacity utilization around the end of March 2009.
  • September 15, 2008: The publication dates for 2009 are now available.
  • August 11, 2008: A Federal Reserve Bulletin article, Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization: The 2008 Annual Revision (858 KB PDF) is now available online. The article reviews the 2008 annual revision to the index of industrial production (IP) and the related measures of capacity and capacity utilization. It discusses both the changes in estimation methods introduced in the revision and the revised estimates of IP, capacity, and capacity utilization.
  • June 17, 2008: Seasonal factors for auto and truck production were revised in June 2008 and extended through December 2008. These factors were based on production data through April 2008 and were revised back to December 2007. Seasonal factors will next revise in mid-October 2008, after production data for the third quarter are available. A containing these seasonal factors is available for download.
  • April 16, 2008: Monthly releases now include new or revised indexes for a six-month reporting window, which encompasses one month of new data and revisions to the previous five months of data. The new longer reporting window allows the incorporation of additional lagging data before an annual revision. Had a six-month window been used over the past year, an additional 3 percent to 4 percent of IP would have reflected source data. For a few indexes, the longer reporting window will cause the latest month of data shown to be as many as five months earlier than the latest value for aggregate IP; data for detailed production indexes are not shown in the supplement to the G.17 release until either the underlying data are available or the reporting window is closed.
  • April 1, 2008: Beginning with the release of March data in the Federal Reserve's monthly G.17 Statistical Release, monthly releases will be based on a six-month reporting window: One month of new data will be reported, and the previous five months of data will be revised. For example, the monthly release to be issued on April 16, 2008 will include new data for March and revised data for October 2007 through February 2008. Previously, the monthly releases were issued with a four-month reporting window, which covered one month of new data and revisions to the previous three months of data.
  • March 28, 2008: The Federal Reserve Board issued its annual revision to the index of industrial production (IP) and the related measures of capacity and capacity utilization. The data files and Data Download Application will have updated industrial production, capacity, and capacity utilization data at about 2:00 p.m. The vehicle assembly data was updated for the new seasonal factors at about 3:30 p.m.

Previous notices and updates can be found here.
