Whitfield Announces $283,292 Grant for Sturgis Municipal Airport May 5, 2006 U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield announced Friday that the Sturgis Municipal Airport has been
awarded a $283,292 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The grant provides funding for the construction of a new above-ground fuel system at the airport. Fuel tanks at the airport are currently located underground, which will be removed to avoid potential environmental concerns.

I am pleased that the Sturgis airport has been awarded these funds, said Whitfield. This grant will help bring the airport into compliance with federal environmental standards and will improve daily operations at the airport. I will continue working to provide other federal assistance to Union County.

The grant is administered through the FAAs Airport Improvement Program (AIP). The AIP provides federal assistance for the planning and development of public use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). The NPIAS designates more than 3,300 airports that are significant to national air transportation and which are eligible for federal assistance.
