Building better forests and students one summer at a time
REDDING, Calif. (April 29, 2009) –The Shasta McCloud Management Unit on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest is taking applications for the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program. To qualify for this program you must be between 15 and 18 years old. Enrollees must be 15 by June 15, 2009 and cannot turn 19 during the program. The program generally consists of half males and half females. The program dates are June 15, 2009 – July 31, 2009.
The YCC was established on August 13, 1971 as a three-year pilot program with the goal of placing young adults from different social, economic, racial, cultural and gender backgrounds in an environment where they could cultivate work, social and educational skills. The summer employment program permits men and women to enjoy working, earning and learning by doing projects that further the development and conservation of the nation’s natural resources.
"It's important these younger generations know they can make an impact. We want them to have a sense of stewardship over the land. Projects like the YCC help achieve that," said Forest Supervisor Sharon Heywood.
The YCC crew consists of seven people. Six YCC crew-members and one crew-leader from the Mount Shasta Ranger Station. The work will consist of various projects on the Shasta McCloud Management Unit. The work is hard but very rewarding. There are field trips to the Lava Beds National Monument, Burney Falls State Park and a graduation day at Lake Siskiyou. The chosen enrollees will report to the Mount Shasta Ranger Station Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with half hour lunch breaks.
"The Mount Shasta YCC focuses on responsibility, safety and learning about the resources available with the Forest Service," said Jodi Marron, Shasta-Trinity National Forest spokesperson.
Applicants must mail applications to the Mount Shasta Ranger Station, 204 W Alma St. Mount Shasta, CA. 96067. Applications must be received no later than May 8, 2009. Enrollees will be chosen by a random drawing by members of the Mount Shasta Community at a public meeting, held in the Mount Shasta Ranger Station Conference room on May 11, 2009 at 9 a.m. There will be a mandatory orientation for the chosen enrollees and alternates and their parents at Mount Shasta City Park on May 26 at 7 p.m. Enrollees are expected to wear 8" leather boots, denim type pants and bring a long sleeve shirt to work each day.
"I believe this is a great opportunity for young men and women to work and learn about how we manage our national forest. The YCC program in Mount Shasta has been in operation for 35 years and has been able to giver over a thousand young adults this valuable opportunity" Tom Powers, Program Manager of YCC at Mount Shasta.
