Thompson and Sanchez to Tour Southwest Border with Secretary Napolitano

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

March 31, 2009 (WASHINGTON) – Tomorrow, April 1st, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA), Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Border, Maritime, and Global Counterterrorism, will visit the Southwest border region with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. The visit will include a tour of border patrol operations and a visit to the Otay Mesa port of entry, situated across the border from Tijuana.

Chairman Thompson released the following statement in advance of the visit:

“The escalating violence in the U.S-Mexico border region is a serious security threat. This visit provides an opportunity to see, firsthand, how the new Southwest Border Security Initiative will be implemented. Working with our Mexican counterparts and strengthening law enforcement’s capacity to combat the violence is critical to both nations.”
