Residential Furnaces and Boilers

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE or the Department) is required by the Energy Policy and Conservation Act and its amendments to consider national energy conservation standards for residential furnaces and boilers. On October 22, 1997, the Secretary determined, based on the best information currently available, that it appears energy conservation standards for residential furnaces and boilers would be technologically feasible and economically justified, and would result in significant energy savings.

The Department has gathered and analyzed data and information for the Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANOPR) and its Technical Support Document (TSD), as part of the standards rulemaking process. To fulfill DOE's commitment to the July 1996 Process Rule (61 FR 36974) — to make information available to the public as soon as possible — the ANOPR document, the TSD, and the analysis tools for the ANOPR analysis are available below.
