Recycling Program
Thank you Headquarters! Thanks to you, we are one of the top five recyclers among Federal agencies in the Washington metropolitan area! The Department of Energy has generated over $150,000 in recycling revenues. Since 1995, the recycling revenues (over $111,000) have been earmarked for tuition assistance at the Department's two Child Development Centers! Every can, every bottle, every piece of paper helps. It helps not only to protect the environment, it also helps to provide quality day care for DOE children!
Since the recycling program began in Fiscal Year 1991, we have recycled over 3,961 tons of paper and 57 tons of glass/plastic/aluminum. This means, that approximately 161,000 cubic feet of landfill was avoided. This is equivalent to an area the size of the Forrestal cafeteria dining room being filled over 11 feet high (or 2/3 full)! This last fiscal year, we recycled over 299.1 tons of paper and 5.6 tons of plastic, aluminum, and glass. So far this year (through January, 2000), we have recycled over 87.8 tons of paper and 2.4 tons of glass, plastic, and aluminum. While the numbers so far, are impressive, we can still do better. We continue to recycle white paper, gray paper, newspaper, telephone books, bound books, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass containers. Did you also know that we can now recycle cardboard (Germantown only), colored paper, magazines, and envelopes?
Your continued efforts are needed in the recycling program. By recycling, you provide a cleaner environment and you provide tuition assistance for the Child Development Centers at Headquarters.
