FEC TO HOLD A BROAD-RANGING HEARING,
WEDNESDAY-THURSDAY, JAN. 14-15
The Federal Election Commission will convene a public hearing at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, to hear comments on improving its policies and procedures. The hearing is scheduled to resume on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 10 a.m.
The Commission has received 25 written comments submitted in response to the questions contained in the Notice of Hearing published in the Federal Register, and more than 200 responses addressing other issues. Sixteen witnesses, including former FEC Commissioners and legal practitioners with extensive experience in campaign finance law, are scheduled to present oral testimony. Topics are expected to include policy statements, advisory opinions, public information and the compliance and enforcement processes, as well as the procedures contained in the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, as amended, and the Commission’s implementing regulations.
The two-day hearing will be held at the Commission’s offices at 999 E Street, N.W. in Washington. The schedule of witnesses is available on the FEC Web site.
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is an independent regulatory agency that administers and enforces federal campaign finance laws. The FEC has jurisdiction over the financing of campaigns for the U.S. House, the U.S. Senate, the Presidency and the Vice Presidency. Established in 1975, the FEC is composed of six Commissioners who are nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
