International Standards & Policy Development

NNSA, with the technical support of its national laboratories, plays a crucial role in the U.S. government’s efforts to develop international policy and criteria for the security of nuclear material and nuclear facilities.  NNSA played an important role in amending the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Nuclear Facilities to better reflect the threat environment.

NNSA also led the international effort to revise the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) recommendations for The Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Nuclear Facilities and supports IAEA development of a series of nuclear security documents that would mirror the IAEA’s series on nuclear safety.
