FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulation)

The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) system was established to codify and publish uniform policies and procedures for acquisition of supplies and services by all executive agencies. The system consists of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), the primary document, and agency acquisition regulations that implement or supplement the FAR. The FAR, which is indexed by topic, contains the established procedures for every step in the procurement process, from the time someone in the government discovers a need for a product or service to the time the purchase is complete.

The FAR is issued and maintained jointly under the statutory authorities granted to the Secretary of Defense, Administrator of General Services and the Administrator, National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Statutory authorities to issue and revise the FAR have been delegated to the Procurement Executives in DOD, GSA and NASA.

The FAR is codified at 48 CFR Chapter 1 and amended as needed. The loose-leaf circulars and the Internet version are updated as soon as possible after FAR rules are published in the Federal Register. Click here to access the most current version of the FAR.

To subscribe to the FAR, contact the Superintendent of Documents at 202-512-1800; call 202-512-1806 for any problems with subscriptions.  A loose-leaf copy of the FAR, Federal Acquisition Circulars, can be downloaded at FAC.
