Measure E6: Violations of Drinking Water Standards

  • The estimated annual percentages for measure E6 have in many cases noticeably increased compared to our previous releases of these data. These changes are primarily due to recent efforts by several states to clean up errors in their violation data.
  • The percentage of children served by community water systems that reported exceeding a Maximum Contaminant Level or violated a treatment standard decreased from 20 percent in 1993 to 10 percent in 2006.
  • From 1993-2006, approximately 0.3 percent of the children served by community water systems were served by systems that reported violations of the nitrate or nitrite standard.
  • A new standard for disinfection byproducts was adopted in 2001. In 2006, 1.4 percent of all children served by community water systems were served by systems that had violations of the disinfection byproducts standard.
