DR. S. ROY WILSON
Governing Board Vice Chairman
Riverside County Representative 


Dr. S. Roy Wilson has served on the AQMD Governing Board since December 1987, first representing the cities of Riverside County and since January 1995 representing the county itself.  In September, 2002, Wilson was chosen by the Governing Board to serve as Vice Chairman effective February 7, 2003.  He was elected Riverside County Supervisor representing the Fourth Supervisorial District in November 1994, and re-elected in 1998 and again in 2002.  He has served as Chairman of the Board of Supervisors three times, the most recent term from January through December, 2004.

Wilson holds a doctorate in higher education from the University of Southern California; an M.A. from California State University, Stanislaus; and a B.A. from California State University, Fresno.

He served as professor of journalism and mass communication at the College of the Desert from 1967 to 1995, having previously served as an Assistant Professor of Journalism and Assistant to the Executive Dean at California State University, Stanislaus. In 1995 he was inducted into the Community College Journalism Association's Hall of Fame. Wilson also has extensive media experience. He has worked for the Turlock Daily Journal, radio station KYNO in Fresno, and as a summer interviewer for KABL-TV in Palm Desert.

Wilson was elected to the Palm Desert City Council in 1977 after serving as a member of the City's Planning Commission from 1974 to 1977. Re-elected to the Council four times, Councilman Wilson served four times as mayor. An appointee to the Riverside County Transportation Commission since 1980, he served several terms as Chairman, most recently beginning in January 2004.

Wilson retains professional affiliations with many journalism organizations, including the Society of Professional Journalists. He is past president of the National Community College Journalism Association and the California/Arizona Journalism Association of Community Colleges. He is also a member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Author of McGraw-Hill's Mass Media/Mass Culture: An Introduction, he also writes magazine articles on topics of local interest, including transportation and air quality. He reads everything from bestsellers to serious literature, and in his limited spare time enjoys the great outdoors while playing golf.
