Fifth District Supervisor Mike Antonovich joined AQMD's Governing Board in
January 1988. A native of Los Angeles, he holds both his M.A. and B.A. from
California State University at Los Angeles.
Antonovich has experience as a government and history instructor in the Los
Angeles Unified School District from 1966 to 1972, and served as a member of
the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees from 1969 to 1973.
He was elected to the California State Assembly in 1972 representing the communities
of Glendale, Burbank, Sunland, Tujunga, Atwater, Griffith Park, Lakeview Terrace
and Sun Valley. He served as a Republican Whip in the Assembly from 1976 to
1978.
In 1980 Antonovich was elected to his first term as Supervisor, representing
the northern half of Los Angeles County. He served as Chairman of the Board
of Supervisors in 1983, 1987 and 1991 and as Mayor in 1983, 1987, 1991,
2001 and 2006.
A member of more than a dozen local organizations and with numerous political
affiliations, he was elected Chairman of the California Republican party in
1985 and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1984.
Antonovich has traveled abroad extensively, representing the United States
government in Egypt, Israel and South Africa. He was a presidential appointee
to the J. Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board from 1991 to 1993, a member of
the Presidential Commission on Privatization 1987-88, and a member of the U.S.
Delegation to the United Nations International Conference on Indo-Chinese Refugees
in 1989.
