The Business Standards Division is a newly created entity within the Montana Department of Labor and Industry. The Division has been established as a result of Senate Bill 445 (2001 Legislative Session) which reorganized the Montana Department of Commerce.

Senate Bill 445 reassigned certain functions of the Department of Commerce to the Department of Labor and Industry. Those functions that are now a part of the Department of Labor and Industry - Business Standards Division include: Building Codes, Business and Occupational Licensing, Health Care Licensing and Weights and Measures.

  • The Building and Measurement Standards Bureau establishes and enforces minimum building (including accessibility), plumbing, mechanical, electrical, energy, elevator, and boiler codes and is responsible for licensing, inspecting, testing, and certifying all weighing or measuring devices used in commercial transactions.
  • The Business and Occupational Licensing Bureau is charged with licensing and regulating persons and businesses engaged in specific (non-health care related) professions and occupations.
  • The Health Care Licensing Bureau is charged with licensing and regulating persons and businesses engaged in specific health care related professions and occupations.


The Business Standards Division is located at 301 South Park in Helena, Montana.
