The Central States Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine consists of 200 students and professionals practicing clinical medicine, research, education and an array of health and fitness disciplines. Members work in clinical settings, research laboratories, classrooms and fitness facilities to advance health through science, education and medicine.
The Central States Chapter supports various initiatives to promote fitness and health through physical activity including educational meetings, newsletters and lecture tours. A highlight in 2006 is the chapter’s Annual Meeting to be held October 20-21 in Kansas City, Missouri.
We are a Prevention Research Center, one of 33 funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These centers are situated in universities throughout the U.S. Our goal at the University of Oklahoma Prevention Research Center is to demonstrate with scientific evidence that the Surgeon General's landmark report on physical activity (1996) can be implemented in public schools and results in improvements in students' activity patterns and markers of health. Our model programs are in the town of Anadarko, OK with a population of approximately 6,500. The six Anadarko schools have about 2,000 students, 61% American Indian, 6% African American, 7% Hispanic and 26% Caucasian. With roughly 50% of students in an overweight zone, the Anadarko Public Schools welcome our efforts. The school interventions are on-going. Two-thirds of the employees of the schools (n=200) are also engaged in a daily walking intervention to promote health. During our 2006 School Health Day activities in the fall, we will highlight the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
