In March, Always Play Fair will kick-off the Packy PlayFair State of Sportsmanship National Tour. During this 50-state tour, Packy will meet with Governors and visit elementary schools, after-school programs and other youth events. Tour goals are to promote and advance good sportsmanship; encourage youth, parents, coaches and administrators to pledge to a higher standard of conduct; and encourage commitment from national, state and local leaders to make sportsmanship a priority. 70% of kids drop out of sports by the age of 13 with the top reason being it’s no longer fun. Improving sportsmanship will help put the fun and participation back in physical activity.
Over the next year, America SCORES will be hosting many initiatives and events to continue promoting health and physical activity among at-risk youth in inner-city public elementary schools across the country. Specifically, these events will be soccer game days, tournaments and professional development workshops to inspire teachers to incorporate physical activity into the regular classroom day. The Better Your Body health and fitness expos will partner with the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports to motivate Americans on the importance of physical activity and fitness. Throughout 2006, Better Your Body, in it's nationwide series of healthy, participitory events will provide information informing and celebrating the PCPFS 50th Anniversary and it's message. Along with the PCPFS, Better Your Body will bring its Call to Action efforts to not only promote a healthy lifestyle but motivate the American public to actual Get Up, Get Out and Get in Shape!
The televised Body Electric program, now celebrating
20 years on PBS, first aired in 1985 and quickly
attracted legions of at-home exercisers. Shape
Magazine touted exercising with weights as the path to
muscle tone and definition.
We subsequently learned that there was a more vital
benefit to be gained from resistance-type exercises.
The entire population could benefit from stronger
muscles and bones, especially post-menopausal women at
greater risk for the fractures associated with
osteoporosis. (Exercising with weights causes a pull
of the muscles on the bones, thereby increasing bone
density.)
The Body Electric program is now reaching
second-generation participants across the United
States and Canada on over 125 PBS-TV stations. This,
our 20th year on PBS television, coincides with the
President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports’
50th Anniversary.
The Center for the Study of Aging (incorporated in 1957) as a 501(c)(3) organization is dedicated to improving the quality of life for older men and women through research, education and training.
Lifelong Health and Fitness (IAPAAS) – quarterly newsletter about the Center’s programs, educational opportunities, calendar, and original and new information including physical activity and aging.
Senior Health Fair (Albany, NY) – Experts and staff from the Center were on-hand during the 2006 Senior Health Fair to answer questions about physical activity, aging, balance and falling prevention. Free informational bulletins were distributed.
“Take Control of Your Life” Programs were presented in the Albany, NY area on physical activity and education, nutrition, and motivation.
Information and referrals are available for professionals, family members and individuals on resources on physical fitness, aging and health.
During the past year, the Eldred Central School District has begun a process to promote and encourage physical activity within the Eldred School Community. Eldred was fortunate to be a recipient of the Carol M. White Physical Education grant through the federal government. This grant has allowed us to enhance our physical education program to the best it has ever been. Our students now have opportunities and choices that Eldred students never had prior to our receiving this grant.
One of our crowning achievements through this grant was to open a state of the art fitness center on the grounds of our junior-senior high school that is now being used by students, staff and community members. We recently opened the fitness center to parents and other members of the community free of charge. Additionally, we have a Wellness Committee in place that meets monthly to discuss nutrition and lifelong physical education. Our goal is for students to graduate with tools to pursue lifelong physical education. Additionally, we are working with our staff and community members to teach them those very same concepts.
ESPN Play Your Way is designed to educate and motivate youth to become physically active through a broad-based, cause-marketing campaign that includes: content/resource development; web site; targeted special events, strategic non-profit collaborations; affiliate, league, corporate alliances and media relations.
ESPN Play Your Way is one of the signature programs under Team ESPN, the corporate outreach program for ESPN, Inc. which introduces a multi-faceted outreach program designed to make a difference in our world and our communities. “Fans helping fans.” ESPN Play Your Way is a youth fitness program designed to encourage kids, ages 7-12, to get fit and remain physically active. To do what they do best: be creative and have fun. ESPN Play Your Way encourages kids to take charge of their own health and fitness. It’s an outreach program that inspires them to be physically active by making up their own physically active games and writing their own rules.
ESPN Play Your Way is a unique program. It’s whatever kids want it to be. It’s all up to them and wherever their imagination takes them. This youth fitness initiative is important because the lack of physical activity among Americans has significantly contributed to the overwhelming increase in childhood obesity and other health-related diseases. Not to mention the barriers to physical activity including lack of motivation, accessible places to play and access to equipment.
TARGET AUDIENCES
Adult Influencers - Educators and involved parents (primary audience)
ESPN Play Your Way is a program designed to give influencers – educators, involved parents, counselors, community leaders – some direction on how to get kids more active. Not necessarily in the sense of organized sports, but more along the lines of encouraging kids to have fun while being active. By concentrating our efforts on both teachers and involved parents, we will reach community members who have the greatest ability to implement ESPN Play Your Way programs.
Youth (secondary audience ages 7-12)
Getting kids active earlier leads to a healthy lifestyle and ESPN Play Your Way uses a unique approach; it’s about being a kid and having fun. It’s about playing games…lots and lots of games! ESPN Play Your Way places the priority on fun and not letting anything get in the way. Fun has never been more accessible. All the tools for kids to have fun can be right in front of them including things they have never thought of before. Not everyone has the resources to join little league or buy their own equipment. However, everyone has access to the greatest tool for creating fun and being active: their imagination. Fun is meant to be discovered. ESPN Play Your Way wants to inspire and provoke, through the power of suggestion, the elements of fun. After all, “a great imagination makes its own rules.”
ESPN Play Your Way currently has programs activated in New York, Connecticut, California, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Michigan, Illinois, Texas, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Washington D.C.

The mission of the Genesee Valley Health Partnership is to improve health outcomes in Livingston County through collaboration, education, prevention and practice.
Objectives:
- To strengthen the local health system through continued coalition building.
- To improve health care access for Livingston County residents including pre-hospital care, primary care, hospital and after-care health services.
- To improve the health status of Livingston County residents.
Our organization is concerned with school, worksite, and community wellness. We have a childhood obesity prevention program known as HIP HOP that involves collaboration and consultation, and next year, curriculum. We also provide a physical activity initiative to our partners called Simple Steps that encourages participants to follow the Surgeon General's recommendations on exercise.
Ragdoll is the creator of innovative children's programs like Teletubbies and Boohbah. All of Ragdoll's programs reflect our philosophy that children's confidence and self-esteem are developed through active fun and laughter. To show the company's support for healthy choices from the youngest age, Ragdoll is sponsoring the sixth annual Get Up and Go! Teletubbies National Day of Exercise. Taking place on May 17, 2006, the day will be marked by a special broadcast of "Go! Exercise with the Teletubbies" on PBS KIDS as well as events hosted by local PBS member stations across the country. The Get Up and Go! program is designed to drive awareness among teachers, parents and caregivers about the importance of physical movement and the joy of active participation for young children.
Teletubbies has always been about movement, physical development and exploration for pre-school children, and the Get Up and Go! program has been specially created to encourage active fun in a playful and safe way, helping children to gain self-confidence and self-awareness, while developing their physical capabilities.
Learning through physical activity plays a crucial role in children's overall development. Young children need to be not only physically literate (walking, running, balancing etc) but also able to play amongst others, create their own games and enjoy the excitement of moving with energy. Through the use of the Teletubbies, Get Up and Go! encourages children to get up and try a range of actions and tasks that they could then do again on their own or with a parent. It says to young children: it's great fun to move.
To host your own Get Up and Go! event on May 17th (or any other day!) contact your local PBS Station or go to www.getupandgo.tv for more information!

As a fitness enthusiast, personal trainer, former owner of a chain of health clubs and founder of a line of fitness equipment I know the value of motivation and positive reinforcement that people need to be healthy and to exercise. I founded Its My Bod to create a truly innovative and inspiring Healthy Activity Rewards Program to promote greater fitness awareness by providing adults and children with rewards based incentives to motivate them to exercise regularly and watch their diets.
Members are motivated to maintain a Healthy Lifestyle by earning Healthy Activity Points and receive positive reinforcement when redeeming those points for discounts and gift cards with participating local and national retailers, restaurants, airlines, car rentals, cruise lines, and hotels. The program is fun and promotes healthy competition among family members to earn greater rewards by continuing to maintain their healthy activities and lifestyles.
Much of the excitement about the Program is about how easy and fast it is to accrue points and redeem valuable awards. Visit www.ItsMyBod.com to see the wide array of Redemption Partners along with the Healthy Activities categories in our Workout Log that make this Program attractive to everyone.

Beginning in September 2005, WNED and ThinkBright Lifelong Learning launched a nine-month television and outreach initiative called "b-Healthy for Life." The purpose of the project is to provide information and resources to people to help keep them healthy throughout their lives.
The content for this initiative is being delivered on multiple formats including broadcast television, radio, outreach and the Web. This approach reaches the maximum viewers with multiple exposures to the project and its information.
Like other communities across America, Western New York struggles with high rates of stroke and heart disease. Given this major need, "b-Healthy for Life" aims to create a culture for health that supports preventive, healthy lifestyle choices.
Goals:
- Promote a healthy lifestyle involving eating right, increasing physical activity, and reducing stress.
- Prevent heart, diabetes and stroke disease as well as obesity.
- Close the gap between good intention and behavior.
Guiding Principles:
- Create a culture for health in Buffalo.
- Focus on energy and balance in family health.
- Use informative programming and news to inspire people.
- Engage young people as champions for health and link health to academic achievement.
- Promote interdisciplinary and inter-sector collaboration.
- Work through gate-keeping organizations and existing health networks to accomplish our goals.
- Connect health to community building.
In an effort to combat the alarming physical and psychological health hazards affecting America’s young girls, the Women’s Sports Foundation is launching a multi-million dollar initiative to get one million inactive girls to participate in regular physical activity and keep another one million currently active girls ages 8-18 from dropping out of physical activity. Launched on the occasion of the Foundation’s 30th anniversary, the initiative - GoGirlGo! – is a national education and awareness campaign to arm adults and girls with tools to enable girls to live an active lifestyle and educate others about physical activity.
Our YMCA currently serves 10,000 people in five communities in Central NY. Our youngest member is three months old and our eldest is 96; both come three times per week. We will offer a vast number of physical activities, sports and healthy choices for our communities and partner with our city governments, schools, hospitals and community based organizations to generate thinking about healthy lifestyles and activating America. We will incorporate a “Mayor’s Challenge” for our five areas to compete for healthy lifestyles through the YMCA. With this way of thinking, our kids will fight obesity, live longer than their parents, and keep the momentum going forever.
The Yomenco Project is a media program Doc Film/DVD/video/TV Programming and on-site programming/training which effects positive change in senior populations.
The program has received the attention of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; several professors will be studying these techniques. The scientific studies show that dance/movement/meditation therapies are the most effective preventative for Alzheimer’s, Dementia, pain management and slowing cognitive decline.
The following benefits of the program have also been observed:
- Develop more loving relationships between the staff and residents
- De-stress the staff
- Reduce chemical dependence
- Improve sleep of the residents
- Improve behavior of the residents
- Improve state of mind of the residents
- Improve balance and reduce risk of falling
- Empower family members to visit more frequently
Yomenco is an effective and affordable physical therapy/exercise motivation/stress management for a group. It’s a little too sexy, a little too spiritual to feel like “health” or “wellness.” It is an effective therapy which engages all populations especially those facing health challenges such as the elderly and those in rehab.
