GIOVANNI IN THE NEWS

The January 9 issue of the American Geophysical Union's (http://www.agu.org/) weekly newspaper, Eos, has a feature article on Giovanni, the GES DISC Online Visualization and Analysis Infrastructure. The article is entitled "Online Analysis Enhances Use of NASA Earth Science Data", and it discusses several different ways that Giovanni allows scientists to effectively utilize data acquired by NASA's fleet of Earth observation satellites. Giovanni provides researchers with the capability to examine data on atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric temperature, water vapor and clouds, atmospheric aerosols, precipitation, and ocean chlorophyll and surface temperature.

The first image in the Eos article demonstrates several different data analyses of a dust storm emanating from the Sahara Desert. Goddard scientists recently determined that a small area in the Sahara Desert, the Bodele Depression, supplies much of the dust in these storms, which fertilizes the soils of the South American rain forest. The Bodele Depression and the recently-published research concerning it was the subject of the NASA Earth Observatory featured image on January 5, "Bodele Depression Dust Feeds Amazon": http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/NewImages/images.php3?img_id=17512.
