BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and the Tennessee Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health developed the program in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Education, the Tennessee Department of Health and the Tennessee Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

BlueCross WalkingWorks for Schools is a voluntary in-school walking program for students, teachers, staff and administrators in Tennessee schools. The program was created to teach children in grades K-5 the benefits of proper exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle and to curb the growing trend of childhood obesity.  Participants are asked to walk at least five minutes each school day for a period of 12 weeks during each semester.  Classrooms that walk the recommended 5 minutes daily, 5 days per week for 12 weeks during each semester will complete the program having walked 600 minutes (30 miles) more than they would have without the program.

Commit to Get Fit Logo

Commit to Get Fit is a Nashville, TN non-profit which was launched to combat childhood obesity.

The company will serve to educate both children and their parents, providing the physical and behavioral modifications necessary to achieve healthy weight-loss goals, leading to a permanent life-change for participants.

One option being considered and explored is to work in collaboration with the YMCA to give a 30-day pass to the parents of all the kids who participate in the President’s Challenge. This way it will be a family affair.  In addition, I have had some discussions with the local NBC affiliate, WSMV about running one-minute vignettes.  Potentially, these vignettes could focus on a community-wide campaign for the President’s Challenge.

It is our goal to provide a safe clean and friendly environment to many whom otherwise would not have access to a fitness center. Our main focus is weight management. We also host sporting events, specialized training, nutrition education and we will be opening a speed and agility school in the spring. By working closely with local industry we have been able to provide gym access at a reduced rate for their employees.
