In March, Always Play Fair will kick-off the Packy PlayFair State of Sportsmanship National Tour. During this 50-state tour, Packy will meet with Governors and visit elementary schools, after-school programs and other youth events. Tour goals are to promote and advance good sportsmanship; encourage youth, parents, coaches and administrators to pledge to a higher standard of conduct; and encourage commitment from national, state and local leaders to make sportsmanship a priority. 70% of kids drop out of sports by the age of 13 with the top reason being it’s no longer fun. Improving sportsmanship will help put the fun and participation back in physical activity.

Body Electric

Contact: Heidi Billittier

E-mail: mail@bodyelectrictv.com

The televised Body Electric program, now celebrating 20 years on PBS, first aired in 1985 and quickly attracted legions of at-home exercisers. Shape Magazine touted exercising with weights as the path to muscle tone and definition.

We subsequently learned that there was a more vital benefit to be gained from resistance-type exercises. The entire population could benefit from stronger
muscles and bones, especially post-menopausal women at greater risk for the fractures associated with osteoporosis. (Exercising with weights causes a pull
of the muscles on the bones, thereby increasing bone density.)

The Body Electric program is now reaching second-generation participants across the United States and Canada on over 125 PBS-TV stations. This, our 20th year on PBS television, coincides with the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports’
50th Anniversary.

During the past year, the Eldred Central School District has begun a process to promote and encourage physical activity within the Eldred School Community. Eldred was fortunate to be a recipient of the Carol M. White Physical Education grant through the federal government. This grant has allowed us to enhance our physical education program to the best it has ever been. Our students now have opportunities and choices that Eldred students never had prior to our receiving this grant.

One of our crowning achievements through this grant was to open a state of the art fitness center on the grounds of our junior-senior high school that is now being used by students, staff and community members. We recently opened the fitness center to parents and other members of the community free of charge. Additionally, we have a Wellness Committee in place that meets monthly to discuss nutrition and lifelong physical education. Our goal is for students to graduate with tools to pursue lifelong physical education. Additionally, we are working with our staff and community members to teach them those very same concepts.

ESPN Play Your Way Logo

ESPN Play Your Way is designed to educate and motivate youth to become physically active through a broad-based, cause-marketing campaign that includes: content/resource development; web site; targeted special events, strategic non-profit collaborations; affiliate, league, corporate alliances and media relations.

ESPN Play Your Way is one of the signature programs under Team ESPN, the corporate outreach program for ESPN, Inc. which introduces a multi-faceted outreach program designed to make a difference in our world and our communities. “Fans helping fans.” ESPN Play Your Way is a youth fitness program designed to encourage kids, ages 7-12, to get fit and remain physically active. To do what they do best: be creative and have fun. ESPN Play Your Way encourages kids to take charge of their own health and fitness. It’s an outreach program that inspires them to be physically active by making up their own physically active games and writing their own rules.

ESPN Play Your Way is a unique program. It’s whatever kids want it to be. It’s all up to them and wherever their imagination takes them. This youth fitness initiative is important because the lack of physical activity among Americans has significantly contributed to the overwhelming increase in childhood obesity and other health-related diseases. Not to mention the barriers to physical activity including lack of motivation, accessible places to play and access to equipment.

TARGET AUDIENCES
Adult Influencers - Educators and involved parents (primary audience)
ESPN Play Your Way
is a program designed to give influencers – educators, involved parents, counselors, community leaders – some direction on how to get kids more active. Not necessarily in the sense of organized sports, but more along the lines of encouraging kids to have fun while being active. By concentrating our efforts on both teachers and involved parents, we will reach community members who have the greatest ability to implement ESPN Play Your Way programs.

Youth (secondary audience ages 7-12)
Getting kids active earlier leads to a healthy lifestyle and ESPN Play Your Way uses a unique approach; it’s about being a kid and having fun. It’s about playing games…lots and lots of games! ESPN Play Your Way places the priority on fun and not letting anything get in the way. Fun has never been more accessible. All the tools for kids to have fun can be right in front of them including things they have never thought of before. Not everyone has the resources to join little league or buy their own equipment. However, everyone has access to the greatest tool for creating fun and being active: their imagination. Fun is meant to be discovered. ESPN Play Your Way wants to inspire and provoke, through the power of suggestion, the elements of fun. After all, “a great imagination makes its own rules.”

ESPN Play Your Way currently has programs activated in New York, Connecticut, California, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Michigan, Illinois, Texas, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Washington D.C.

Ragdoll is the creator of innovative children's programs like Teletubbies and Boohbah. All of Ragdoll's programs reflect our philosophy that children's confidence and self-esteem are developed through active fun and laughter. To show the company's support for healthy choices from the youngest age, Ragdoll is sponsoring the sixth annual Get Up and Go! Teletubbies National Day of Exercise. Taking place on May 17, 2006, the day will be marked by a special broadcast of "Go! Exercise with the Teletubbies" on PBS KIDS as well as events hosted by local PBS member stations across the country. The Get Up and Go! program is designed to drive awareness among teachers, parents and caregivers about the importance of physical movement and the joy of active participation for young children.

Teletubbies has always been about movement, physical development and exploration for pre-school children, and the Get Up and Go! program has been specially created to encourage active fun in a playful and safe way, helping children to gain self-confidence and self-awareness, while developing their physical capabilities.

Learning through physical activity plays a crucial role in children's overall development. Young children need to be not only physically literate (walking, running, balancing etc) but also able to play amongst others, create their own games and enjoy the excitement of moving with energy. Through the use of the Teletubbies, Get Up and Go! encourages children to get up and try a range of actions and tasks that they could then do again on their own or with a parent. It says to young children: it's great fun to move.

To host your own Get Up and Go! event on May 17th (or any other day!) contact your local PBS Station or go to www.getupandgo.tv for more information!

The program has received the attention of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; several professors will be studying these techniques. The following benefits of the program have also been observed:

  • Develop more loving relationships between the staff and residents
  • De-stress the staff
  • Reduce chemical dependence
  • Improve sleep of the residents
  • Improve behavior of the residents
  • Improve state of mind of the residents
  • Improve balance and reduce risk of falling
  • Empower family members to visit more frequently
Yomenco is an effective and affordable physical therapy/exercise motivation/stress management for a group. It’s a little too sexy, a little too spiritual to feel like “health” or “wellness.” It is an effective therapy which engages all populations especially those facing health challenges such as the elderly and those in rehab.
