Four presentations from the Goddard Earth Sciences DISC at the 2008 Fall AGU Meeting in San Francisco are about the application of GES DISC data and visualization capabilities for decision making, societal response to environmental change, and scientific education and investigation for students and interested members of the public.
"Experiences in Bridging the Gap Between Science and Decision Making at NASA's GSFC Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC)" examines GES DISC participation in the NASA Decision Support Through Earth Science Research Results program. The GES DISC has experience with two projects under this program. The experience of the GES DISC in working with data, data structures, usability and interpretation, interoperability, and information management puts this organization in a unique position to identify and address challenges encountered in the process of conveying scientific data to decision makers. "Using NASA's Giovanni Web Portal to Access and Visualize Satellite-Based Earth Science Data in the Classroom" discusses the potential advantages of utilizing the GES DISC Giovanni system, along with other data services, to enhance the classroom research experience in earth science. Giovanni's available data sets include data for atmospheric and ocean processes, and land and model data is being enhanced. The GES DISC is currently creating a set of training modules to provide additional user experience and skill with the data and visualization capabilities found in Giovanni. "The Citizens And Remote Sensing Observational Network (CARSON) Guide: Merging NASA Remote-Sensing Data with Local Environmental Awareness" describes a new initiative to combine innovative earth science data analysis and visualization tools (Giovanni and NEO) with the interest and environmental awareness of citizen scientist observer groups and networks. This pilot project will produce three chapters of the CARSON Guide on the Web, concerning air quality, water quality, and precipitation. The chapters are being written by TERC staff in collaboration with scientists and staff at GSFC. A pilot project at the Maryland Science Center in April 2009 will utilize the chapters with a citizen science observer group. "Data Visualization and Analysis for Climate Studies Using NASA Giovanni Online System" presents the Giovanni system in the context of societal response to climate and environmental change. Giovanni provides data that is crucial to environmental change assessment, particularly such analyses as long-term means; time-series and trend analysis; intra- and interannual variability; and data which characterizes a wide range of societally relevant extreme events, which are frequently related to hazardous or detrimental conditions.
