We Move Kids!

Sponsorship to attend Walking for Health conference at UIUC, October 13-15, 2005

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the American College of Sport Medicine (ACSM) announce “We Move Kids,” a program sponsoring 12 elementary-, middle- or high-school Physical Education/Health teachers to attend Walking for Health: Measurement and Research Issues and Challenges, an ACSM specialty conference held at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, October 13-15, 2005Features of the conference include access to a world-class faculty, as well as programming focused on promoting physical activity and education in the school environment. 
 
Four objectives have been set for the conference:

  • Provide updates and multidisciplinary views of walking and health research and practice
  • Address critical measurement and research challenges in walking and health research, and explore the potential of the latest technology and methods
  • Exchange information on the latest research programs in walking and health
  • Provide training on new methods, programming and intervention
Two sessions specifically devoted to children include:
  • “Children’s health standards for walking steps,” by Robert P. Pangrazi, Ph.D.
  • “Walking behaviors in children,” by Charles B. Corbin, Ph.D., FACSM
There is a Breakfast roundtable Saturday, October 15 in which the We Move Kids’ Teachers and select Walking for Health Faculty members will participate in a focus group discussion.  The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports is serving as an educational partner, and will be distributing relevant materials for all teachers in attendance.
 
You can apply for the We Move Kids program by submitting a 500-1000 word statement of how attending the walking conference will help you promote physical activity in school settings.
 
We Move Kids
provides the conference fee, hotel accommodations (double occupancy), travel (up to $300) and substitute teacher expense (up to $150), and a Saturday breakfast.

 
Application Submission Guidelines:
send an email with:
•Your name,
•School name
•Address
•Phone number
•Email address
•% student in your school participating in a free or reduced price lunch program, and
•How attending the walking conference will help you, as a Health and/or      Physical Educator, promote physical activities in your school (500-1000 words long)

  2. Please put “We Move Kids” in the subject line.
  3. Applications are due by 12 a.m. (midnight), September 30, 2005
  4. Notifications will be made the morning of October 3, 2005.
