Young-In Won is the lead author of a presentation that he will give at the 37th COSPAR (Committee on Space Research) 2008 Scientific Assembly in Montreal, Canada, July 13-16. His co-authors are James Johnson, Jason Li, Gregory Leptoukh, Bruce Vollmer, and Mike Theobald. The presentation is entitled "Variability of Atmospheric Temperatures Derived from Satellite Measurements of Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) and Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) in Connection with Solar Activity". There has been an increasing interest in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, where the temperature is expected to decrease over time because of the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases. This anthropogenically-caused temperature variability is further complicated by the effects of natural changes, such as solar variability. In order to better understand the so-called anthropogenically induced “global change,” it is important to first identify and understand the influence of natural variation. In this presentation, we attempt to address the above complication by time series analysis of MLS data from Aura and UARS, along with the AIRS data correlated with the F10.7 solar flux. The data are cloud-screened to increase the validity of the study. The upper (Stratosphere and Mesosphere from MLS) and lower (Troposphere and Stratosphere from AIRS) atmospheric temperatures are spatially and temporally compared, to investigate further how the upper and lower atmospheres are linked with each other. This study demonstrates synergic way of using multi-sensor data that are archived at the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC, http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/), which is the home to numerous other satellite data sets and user-focused data services.
