Maryland Bankers Community Reinvestment Group (MBCRG) and City of Baltimore Mayor's Office of Employment Development (MOED) One Stop Career Network Model Site

Shortly after the introduction of Money Smart by the FDIC in 2001, MBCRG and MOED began working on a partnership to teach the Money Smart financial education program to job seekers.

Formed in October 1991, MBCRG is a gathering of Greater Baltimore business professionals, community lending specialists, CRA officers, compliance officers and marketers from financial institutions, businesses, insurance and title companies, trade associations and government units, with the purpose to educate themselves about community reinvestment issues and look for ways to enhance community reinvestment efforts for all banks.

MOED coordinates and directs workforce development initiatives responsive to the needs of Baltimore City job seekers and employers, including recruitment and customized training for job retention. During fiscal year 2004, MOED served 18,000 city residents through its four One-Stop Career Centers, placed 5,000 city residents in jobs with an average hourly wage of $9.59, assisted 600 employers in recruiting workers, and placed nearly 5,000 city teens in summer jobs.

Partners

MOED Staff and partner organizations teach classes at MOED's four career centers. Since 2002, MBCRG has facilitated over 90 Money Smart classes at four MOED one stop centers, averaging one class per center per month for nine months each year, except in July, August and December. The partnership also introduced an incentive program with gift certificates and savings bond drawing to encourage the participants to attend multiple sessions. In the past year, more than 300 participants have attended the Money Smart workshops. Surveys completed by the attendees provide positive feedback, which confirms that the workshops are enjoyable and beneficial.
