Realty Transfer Certificate

The Realty Transfer Certificate (RTC) assists the State of Montana in providing fair and equitable taxation to all its citizens, as well as providing the ability to improve compliance by nonresidents and out-of-state companies.

It is important that all information requested on the RTC is accurately furnished by the preparer in order for an ownership to be changed on real property for property tax purposes. That includes the disclosure of the Social Security Number or Federal Employment Identification Number of those individuals or entities involved in the transfer. If the transfer of real property involves foreign nationals, an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number needs to be provided.

We ask for full compliance which means the accurate completion of the RTC. The only exception to this requirement is the filing of an old RTC that has been held in escrow.
