Archaeology at the Presidio
Levantar is a Spanish word meaning “to raise up, awaken, and excite.” Levantar is also the name of the Presidio’s archaeology program for preserving and protecting the park’s underground treasures. These efforts are “raising up” the Presidio’s history for all to understand. While the Presidio’s remarkable past is visible in landscapes, historic buildings, and even spectacular views, more of the story lies beneath the surface. These layers of buried history reveal how people lived here and shaped the land over time. To understand the Presidio’s archaeology program, begin by exploring El Presidio, the site where the Presidio was originally founded 230 years ago. Then see how each aspect of the Presidio archaeology program is awakening us to the park’s past. Archaeology Program Goals- Identify, investigate and conserve significant archaeological resources
- Conduct scholarly research and share the results
- Create a compelling destination for visitors to learn about archaeology and commemorate the cornerstone of this park— El Presidio de San Francisco
- Foster public and private partnerships and encourage stewardship through community participation and education
