The mission of the University of Pittsburgh's "Center for Healthy Aging" is to promote healthy lifestyles and disease prevention in the older adult population of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania through education, research, and public service.

One of our "10 Keys to Healthy Aging" is to "Be Active." As a result, we translate and disseminate research results as well as disseminate quality prevention education materials related to physical activity to the community. In addition, we are currently partnering with AARP on a pedometer walking program. To date, we have registered approximately 300 participants for the 10 week program. We are also collaborating with three other universities on a nationwide walking study. The purpose of the study is to determine which factors in the neighborhood environment make it easy or difficult for older adults to walk outside.

Additional activities included 3 point shoot (13 signed up) and a speed lay-ups (15 signed up) contest.  Numerous ongoing activities continue to be planned to keep the young participants interested and active.

Twin Valley High School Internship Program

Contact: Matt Dornes

E-mail: kdornes@yahoo.com

The mission of the Twin Valley High School Internship Program is to get students some experience in a career field they might be interested in later in life.

In the internship program I will get to experience what it will be like to be a Physical Education Teacher.  Students will perform activities such as gymnastics, sports, fitness activities and games. Getting these elementary students will fight a current problem our country has known as child obesity.  When I grow up I would like to an elementary school gym teacher and through this is a great way to promote physical activity.  My mentor for the internship was a bronze medalist on the U.S. Olympic Field hockey team and she is great with students.
