Christiana Care Health System, Community Outcomes, Moving Women Forward

Moving Women Forward is a lifestyle change program that promotes exercise, weight management and general nutrition to at risk women in Wilmington, DE. At this time we have over 800 women registered for the program. Moving Women Forward is a project of Community Outcomes part of Family and Community Medicine and are funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau (HRSA). Christiana Care is a National Community Center of Excellence in Women's Health.

Exercise opportunities, part of Moving Women Forward, include:

  • Walking for Health and Chair Aerobics programs at the Salvation Army Senior Center at 102 W. 5th St. These programs enable women to meet new friends while they burn calories. Silvia Holden is the program director and can be reached at 302-472-0770. Walking for Health is offered every day from 10-10:30 a.m. Participants wear pedometers to measure steps and receive incentives for completing certain milestones. Chair Aerobics is offered every Tuesday at 11 a.m. and aims to increase joint flexibility and range of motion.
  • "Pump Up the Volume," Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30- 8:00 p.m. at the People's Settlement at 408 E. 8th St. Babysitting is offered for free. To find out more information, Brenda Gunter can be reached at 658-4133 ext 324. "Pump up the Volume" is a free program funded by the Delaware Division of Public Health. In addition, the LIVE IT Support Group is available the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month at 5:30 p.m. This group is for women that have completed previous weight management programs and need the support of other women.   • Line dancing at the Henrietta Johnson Medical Center in South Bridge (Female Wilmington residents only/babysitting available), 1901 Market St. Wilmington Senior Center and the Wilmington Police Athletic League at 3707 N. Market St. All programs are free of charge. Line dancing enables women to dance their pounds away while they listen to urban dance music.
  • The LIVE IT Series, (LIVE IT stands for Lose weight, Individualized Attention, Variety of Exercises, Empower Families, Improve Your Image, and Total Support), is an 8-week weight management workshop which uses a non-diet approach to weight loss and maintenance. Each program is taught by a registered dietitian and community lay health professional. Babysitting is offered and cooking demonstrations are included in the weight management programs. New programs are offered every two months. To register call 302-428-6354.
  • Yes You Can Series, a staff assisted exercise program for women with limited mobility or disability that includes chair exercise and a weight management program. Located at the New Castle Garfield Park Community Acivity Center. Call 428-6521 to register.
  • Yoga. This program is ideal for women who are out of shape and need a slow program to get them moving. Located at the Hanover Church at 18th and Hanover Streets Friday evenings at 6:15 p.m. Go to www.hanoverchurch.org for more information.
  • Prenatal & Postpartum Yoga. Women learn to breathe deeply and relax, which may be helpful as they face the physical demands of labor, birth and motherhood. This program is free to female Wilmington residents and located at the Episcopal Church of St. Andrew & St. Matthew on the corner of 8th and Shipley Streets. Go to www.ssam.org for directions. Delaware Area Health Education Center (AHEC)

The Delaware AHEC is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting access to quality health care and to facilitating health professions workforce development. 

The Delaware AHEC develops and manages health career and health promotion programs.  As part of our mission, the Delaware AHEC targets students and individuals in medically underserved areas.  The Health Educator promotes physical fitness, a balanced diet, and regular exercise as a component of each program.  Because the Delaware AHEC is aware of and committed to eliminating health disparities among low-income individuals and minorities, the Health Educator then targets schools with high percentages of low-income, minority, and/or bilingual students.   All of the Delaware AHEC’s programs are free of charge to any public school, organization, or agency.
