West Virginia on the Move is a statewide initiative to prevent obesity and improve the health of West Virginians by increasing lifestyle physical activity and decrease calorie consumption.  West Virginia on the Move is a state affiliate to the national America on the Move program.  America on the Move is dedicated to helping individuals and communities across the nation make positive changes to improve health and quality of life.  America on the Move inspires Americans to engage in fun, simple ways to become more active and eat more healthfully to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.   America on the Move assists in creating and supporting an integrated grassroots network to build communities that support individual behavior change while encouraging public and private partnerships at the national, state and local level to build the capacity, reach and support needed for individual and community behavior change.  There are programs focused on schools, worksites, faith-based organizations, walking groups, families, health plans, civic groups and individuals.  The programs use pedometers to help participants monitor and increase physical activity.   West Virginia on the Move will demonstrate the importance of promoting community based programs that encourage small behavior changes over time to achieve long-term, positive health outcomes.  West Virginia on the Move will focus on three levels of intervention:

  1. Programmatic: Enroll individuals and groups in the America on the Move program through the website or toll-free line.
  2. Project: Focus on pilot and demonstration projects to educate and collaborate with grassroots networks to develop a comprehensive statewide program.
  3. Policy: Focus on the built environment by partnering to sponsor walkability workshops and policy changes and zoning codes that will encourage environmental change to facilitate physical activity.
