Salazar students participate in 2 levels of physical fitness testing.  The first level is school based and the second level is the Presidential fitness award for 5th and 6th graders.  We will include 4th graders this year.  All students k-6th complete the school wide test that consists of balance, aerobic exercise and flexibility.  The students have worked really hard and have greatly improved this year and we are planning on 10% of our population making Presidential this year.  Many of the skills are worked on through a variety of activities that develop social as well as physical skills.  100% of the students participate in regular or modified testing.  All students who pass the school fitness test have their names placed on the Krimson Knights wall in the gym.  Students passing the Presidential Award have their name on a special wall that will remain up for years to come.

I currently conduct fitness training at my place of residence using a combination of free weights and trail running. My clients ages range from grade school through retirement, both male and female. The goal is always overall fitness and weight management through exercise and sensible diet choices. As part of the 50th anniversary I plan to work with the students from the local middle school (which my daughter attends) to improve their fitness and strength levels in preparation for any specific sports activity they might wish to participate in. This will be done in association with the Physical Education Staff for their input and recommendations relating to the individual students needs. If all goes well we should be in full operation in time for the summer vacation. The objective is to make fitness a habit and also relieve some of the boredom felt by young aspiring athletes who otherwise might not have a productive outlet for their energy.

Obesity is an epidemic among U.S. children and result in serious negative health over a lifespan.  The Child Health Initiative for Lifelong Eating and Exercise (CHILE), a NIDDK-funded study, is a community intervention for decreasing obesity risk in 3- to 5-year-old rural Hispanic and American Indian Head Start children in New Mexico.  CHILE includes strategies to increase physical activity and consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains; and decrease consumption of sweetened beverages, high-fat foods and television viewing time.  CHILE includes classroom curriculum; teachers and food service staff training; and programs for families, health care providers, and community grocery stores.
