The American College of Sports Medicine advances and integrates scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine.

The American College of Sports Medicine is more than 20,000 professionals practicing clinical medicine, research, education and an array of health and fitness disciplines. ACSM and its members work in clinical settings, research laboratories, classrooms and fitness facilities to advance health through science, education and medicine.

As the lead organization or as a partner, ACSM supports scores of initiatives to promote fitness and health through physical activity. A highlight in 2006 is the 10th annual ACSM Health & Fitness Summit & Exposition (April 11-16, Orlando.) Coalition for Living Well after 50

Since 2001, the Coalition has been striving to bring together community resources to define, create, promote and sustain activities, programs and environments that support lifelong activity and health behaviors among older adults. The Coalition consists of more than 50 community groups that are working together to:

  • Increase education and awareness about the relationship of physical activity and health throughout the life span;
  • Support increased opportunities for physical activity for older adults via a variety of delivery channels including home, worksite, church, senior centers and residences etc.; and
  • Identify and address chronic health issues through education, improving access to opportunities for physical activity and developing community resources.

Third Annual Active Living and Senior Day Downtown Brown Bag Lunch Series Kick Off - May 17, 2006

Co-hosted by Coalition for Living Well after 50 & Downtown Business Center

  • Coalition Partner Organizations as well as Downtown Business Center Members are invited to display exhibits showcasing their wares, services and active living programs.
  • Coalition partners provide demonstrations of their activity classes in the outdoor staging area.
  • Attendees can enjoy live music, dance, learn about active living opportunities within the community, win door prizes and get discounts from downtown merchants.
  • This is the second year of partnership with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

The Gary Youth Services Bureau

The Youth Service Bureau is an out-of-court delinquency prevention service provider for ALL youth of Gary.

In 2006 the Gary Youth Services Bureau incorporates the national WeCan! health and wellness curriculum into its annual Summer Recreation day program held at parks sites throughout the city from June 19 - August 11.  WeCan! is just one of several national healthy lifestyles programs the YSB has engaged in its efforts to bring about a more physical and mentally healthy City of Gary. The agency also participates in Hearts N Parks and Character Discovery Challenge Self Esteem and Sportsmanship Program.

The YSB also heads two of the city’s major organized sports leagues- the Summer Recreational Track Program and the Gary Steelers Pop Warner Football & Cheerleaders which emphasize academics and skill development as well as physical fitness.

Greencastle Civic League

The first annual Parent-Child Fitness Day will be held on Saturday, May 20 from 10 a.m. - noon at Greencastle’s most centrally located park—Robe-Ann.  Events will include sack races, relay races, hula hoop contest and relay, egg rolling races, water balloon toss, numeric hot potato, basketball free throw contest, physical fitness contest (pull ups, 100 meter dash, sit-ups), tug-o-war, and an obstacle course.  The purpose of Parent-Child Fitness Day is to engage parents and kids in the community in a free, safe and family-friendly environment enjoying healthy activities.  This program is sponsored by the Greencastle Civic League (of Greencastle, Indiana).

Indiana Governor's Council for Physical Fitness and Sports

The Indiana Governor's Council for Physical Fitness and Sports serves to coordinate and promote public programs, private initiatives, and public-private partnership efforts to promote physical activity and health in order to encourage healthy lifestyles for Hoosiers of all ages. The primary program of the Council is Governor Mitch Daniels' INShape Indiana initiative. In addition, the Council offers the Governor's Fitness Award program and demonstrations at Governor Daniels' Sports Spot each year at events such as the Black and Minority Health Fair held in conjunction with Indiana Black Expo and the Indiana State Fair.

Since 1920, the National Federation of State High School Associations has led the development of interscholastic sports, debate, music, and spirit programs. We establish rules and standards for competition, provide assistance to coaches and officials, and improve the participation experience for students by building awareness and support. Our mission is to help students succeed in their lives. We continually strive to meet the participation and physical activities needs of our nation’s young people. Together, in a partnership with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, we hope to increase the awareness of the numerous benefits that can be achieved through participation.

South Bend Parks & Recreation Department

The South Bend Parks & Recreation Department offers a variety of programs to its citizens of all ages. We are committed to promoting and encouraging healthy lifestyles within our communities. We were chosen as one of the National Recreation and Parks Associations and National Heart Blood and Lung Institutes 52 sites as a Hearts N' Parks Community for three years. Those programs have continued and we are now part of the national "We Can" Program! through AED and NHLBI. We have a new fitness center which opened on December 28, 2005. To-date we have 1,300+ members, we offer a variety of aerobic, yoga and dance classes for adults. In our youth programs we focus on teaching youth about nutrition, fitness and health. Our goal is to help educate the public on making smart, healthy choices in life. To cut back, eat smaller portions and get up and get moving. We have invested in many educational visual aids that are displayed throughout our facilities.
