The New England Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine consists of 880 students and professionals practicing clinical medicine, research, education and an array of health and fitness disciplines. Members work in clinical settings, research laboratories, classrooms and fitness facilities to advance health through science, education and medicine.
The New England Chapter supports various initiatives to promote fitness and health through physical activity including educational meetings, newsletters and advocacy. A highlight in 2006 is the chapter’s Annual Meeting to be held November 9-10 (Location TBD).
I have scheduled a series of slideshows across the U.S. promoting the message of exercise and fitness, and their role in mental and physical health and getting more out of life. My slideshow prominently features the story of the original 1950’s fitness campaign, and uses historic and rare images from contemporary magazines. I have given/and am scheduled to give slideshows promoting exercise and fitness at the following venues, including:
- major libraries and Y’s across Connecticut, including the large and prestigious Greenwich, Ct Library
- Patagonia stores (slideshow sponsor) and other major outdoor/sports stores, such as the leading national REI chain
- family activity centers, including gyms in Connecticut, the largest sports center in New York City (Chelsea Piers), major family ski areas such as Snowbird (Utah) and Vail (Co.), major parks and wilderness centers promoting family hikes, such as the
Mohonk Preserve (largest privately funded wilderness center in New York State) and the hiking festival at the Mohonk Mountain House Hotel, New Paltz, New York
- leading outdoor industry events such as the prestigious Banff Mountain Book Festival (where the book was picked as a finalist) and the Outdoor Retailer Show, Salt Lake City
The Wallingford Family YMCA offers a wide range of fitness activities for adults, youth and families. Fitness classes such as yoga, pilates, water exercise, and kickboxing along with personal training is offered to both Y members and the community. The fitness center has both free weights and up to date cardio equipment. Youth sports, adult and youth leagues, dance classes, karate are available for youth and adults. Swim lessons for all ages 6 months and up are offered year round. A spring tennis tournament and a fall 5K and 10K run are open to the entire community. A climbing wall has recently been installed. The summer day camp is ACA accredited.
