Students from nine Iowa high schools learned the basics of collective bargaining recently through the help of a federal mediator. Labor and management negotiating teams for the fictitious Smedley Manufacturing Company and the International Association of Bleacher Manufacturers, each composed of students, reached agreement during a mock negotiation, intended to teach the students the basics of compromise. Sponsored by the Dubuque Area Labor-Management Council, the mock labor negotiation is an annual event.
