Extended Mass Layoffs (Quarterly)

Employers initiated 3,489 mass layoff events in the first quarter of 2009 that resulted in the separation of 558,909 workers from their jobs, the highest first quarter levels on record for the series. Separations due to slack work/insufficient demand more than tripled over the year. Thirty-two states recorded first quarter program highs in the numbers of separations. Full Text »

Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey

On the last business day of March, job openings in the U.S. numbered 2.7 million, the lowest level since the series began over 8 years ago. The hires rate (3.1 percent) was little changed in March and remained low, while the total separations rate (3.6 percent) was unchanged. Full Text »

The number of unemployed persons increased by 563,000 to 13.7 million in April, and the unemployment rate rose to 8.9 percent. Over the past 12 months, the number of unemployed persons has risen by 6.0 million, and the unemployment rate has grown by 3.9 percentage points. Full Text »
