Playing Fields

A photo of kids playing softball at Fort Scott Field. The Presidio offers many opportunities for outdoor recreation, from trails to beaches to stewardship to tennis courts. The park is also home to several playing fields, the legacy of Army community life and a resource enjoyed by local families.

The Presidio Trust has completed a series of public workshops to explore the long-term vision for playing fields in the park, and to identify ways to improve opportunities for active play. Through this planning process, the Trust gathered input on public preferences for field types and locations, as well as potential concerns. A summary of the workshops, public input received, and culmination of this effort into an overall draft vision for the park’s fields is captured in the Project Documents section below.

The Presidio Trust board of directors has provided the following general guidelines for Trust staff in developing the long-term vision for playing fields:

  • Maintain or slightly increase the current number of playing fields (recognizing that some fields may need to be relocated to achieve other park objectives).
  • Locate any new fields in appropriate places that minimize park traffic and ecological disruption, maximize operational efficiency, preserve the Presidio’s historic character, and protect culturally sensitive areas.

Next Steps & Contact Us

We’re grateful for the community’s active and thoughtful participation in the recent planning process. As a result, the Trust has identified a series of enhancements for the Presidio’s playing fields. A summary of these proposed improvements, including the draft phasing strategy, is provided in the Summary of February 15, 2007 Playing Fields Public Workshop below. Each field would be subject to its own design and compliance process. If you are interested in staying involved, or if you have questions or comments about Presidio playing fields, please contact the Presidio Trust Planning Department at (415) 561-5414 or planning@presidiotrust.gov.
